MIDDLETOWN,Conn. - The Wesleyan women's hockey team completed the weekend sweep of Bowdoin with another 4-3 victory. The Cardinals were able to build up a 4-2 lead going into the third period, before a Polar Bear goal and multiple scoring chances in the final two minutes made for a thrilling finish. Wesleyan improves to 2-0-0 (2-0-0 NESCAC) on the season, their best conference start since 2003-04. Bowdoin drops their second straight to the Cardinals to fall to 0-2-0.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- The first period saw a lot of action, but no goals through the first 15 minutes. The final five minutes was frantic with Wesleyan producing five shots in the 15th minute before breaking through on the sixth which was put in by Chiara Christe '23. She was assisted on the play by Sam DeLeo '25 and Effie Tournas '25
- The second period was full of action, with 21 shots, six penalties, and five goals. Bowdoin capitalized on both of their power plays, while Wesleyan scored on only one of their three power plays. The Wesleyan goal was put through by Sam DeLeo assisted by Audrey McMahon '22 and Mairead Kennedy '24.
- Wesleyan put through two more goals in the period, to extend their lead to 4-2. First it was Effie Tournas 8:30 into the period. Then Jenna Rekoske '24 added an insurance goal with three minutes left in the 2nd
- Bowdoin had another women-up situation two minutes into the final period, producing two consecutive shots but no goals. Wesleyan even produced a short-handed scoring opportunity in the dying seconds of the Polar Bear power play as Jenna Stevens '24 had a shot turned away by the keeper
- Bowdoin took little time to take advantage of their second power play opportunity, scoring less than a minute into a Chiara Christie tripping penalty to cut the lead to one with two minutes remaining
- Playing at full strength in the final 1:30, the Polar Bears kept the pressure up manufacturing four shots which were all turned away by the Cardinals Rei Halloran '23
