MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan women's ice hockey team continues to roll, defeating Post University 4-0 on Saturday night, improving to 4-0 on the season and continuing the Cardinals' best start to a season since the 1998-99 campaign. Post (2-13) loses their 12
th straight while the Eagles haven't scored a goal in four straight games.
Rei Halloran '23 was one of the key figures on Saturday, as the junior goaltender posted 17 saves for her first career shutout. She received plenty of key contributions in front of net as the Cardinals outshot the Eagles 40-17. Four different Cardinals scored on the evening including
Sam DeLeo '25,
Audrey McMahon '22,
Bridget Cornell '23 and
Ally Detre '22. McMahon chipped in an assist to give her a multi-point night while
Brigitte Goeler-Slough '23 recorded two assists for the first two points of her career.
Scoring chances in the opening period were few and far between for either side as the two teams combined for just 11 shots on-goal (9-2 in favor of Wesleyan) but despite the slow start, Wesleyan still managed to head into the locker room ahead 1-0 after one. Goeler-Slough won a faceoff in the offensive end then
Jori Balsam '23 dug the puck off the boards and back to DeLeo at the point. Winding up for a wrist shot, DeLeo's attempt went low and with Detre screening in-front, Post's goalie Grace Glasrud didn't see the puck until it was too late as the defender put the Cardinals ahead with just 1:34 left in the first period.
Sam DeLeo '25 scored late in the first period, giving Wesleyan a lead they wouldn't relinquish
Wesleyan carried that momentum into the second period, outshooting Post 15-9 in the frame but the Eagles very nearly tied the score with consecutive breakaways just seconds apart. First it was Holly Kubichek who skated in on Halloran all alone but missed wide. Then less than 20 seconds later, it was a Post two-on-none but Emily Racco received the centering pass and shot wide of the net as Wesleyan still led 1-0 after two.
Some much-needed insurance came off the stick of McMahon just over five minutes into the third as
Jenna Stevens '24 won a board battle with a Post defender. The puck found the stick of McMahon along the boards and the Cardinal forward was allowed to skate in on the wing and fire a wrister that went to the upper left corner of the net, making it 2-0 Cardinals.
Wesleyan continued to pepper Glasrud with more shots, firing 15 more on-goal in the third period with all that pressure leading to two late Wesleyan goals to ensure the Cardinal victory. Cornell broke through with her first of the season as McMahon nudged the puck up to
Caitlin Reilly '23 near center ice. The junior skated into the Post defensive end and fed Cornell on the left wing who saw her initial attempt saved but she skated around the net and her second wrist shot found the back of the net for her first goal of the season. The assist is the first point of Reilly's career.
A final Wesleyan goal came with just 37 seconds left as
Mairead Kennedy '24 passed up the boards to Goeler-Slough who carried in and spotted Detre open in the middle. The successful centering pass allowed Detre to fire on-goal which went through the pads of Glasrud and in for the senior's first goal of the season.
Brigitte Goeler-Slough '23 tallied two assists tonight which also went down as the first two points of her career
Wesleyan also dominated from the faceoff dot, winning 34 against 21 losses highlighted by McMahon (12 wins, 3 losses) and Goeler-Slough (8 wins, 1 loss). The Cardinal power play struggled, going 0-for-7 but Halloran and the penalty kill unit shut down the Eagles' special teams unit, holding Post to an 0-for-4 showing.
Wesleyan (4-0) looks to continue on this incredible start to the season on Sunday with a 6 PM start against Salve Regina (1-6) from Middletown.
