Men’s Basketball Passes First True Road Test, Defeats Drew 90-76

Wesleyan is now 6-0 to start the season for the third time in five seasons

MADISON, N.J. – Wesleyan men's basketball passed their first true road test Sunday afternoon, defeating Drew University in New Jersey, 90-76. The Cardinals were led by guard Sam Peek '22 who had 17 points on 7-for-18 shooting (3-6 3FG). Four other Cardinals joined him in double figures. Gabe Ravetz '23 added 16 points, Antone Walker '22 had 12, and Preston Maccoux '23 and Jordan James '22 each had 10. A hot shooting night from beyond the arc was the story once again as Wesleyan nailed 12 of their 22 attempts to put away the Rangers.

Wesleyan is now 6-0, their best start since their 9-0 opening to the 2017-18 season. That season was the last time in which they made the NCAA tournament, earning an at-large bid and winning their first-ever NCAA Tournament game. Drew drops to 2-4, losing their second straight contest.

HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Wesleyan jumped out to a 9-2 lead, with Peek delivering on a short jumper to cap off the run. Drew responded, and a three pointer by Michael Kane cut the lead to two with 14:51 remaining in the half
  • The Cardinal bench gave them a spark midway through the half, helping them extend the lead to nine with 3:51 remaining.  Peek beat the halftime buzzer with a three, finishing the half with 11 points and increasing the Wesleyan advantage to 12
  • The second half lead grew quickly, with Nicky Johnson '25 hitting a three-pointer to extend the Drew deficit to 20 points less than five minutes into the half
  • Back-to-back three pointers by the Rangers cut the lead to 14 with 10 minutes to go, but that would be as close as they got in making a comeback
  • Wesleyan responded with three stops in a row which they turned into six points, extending the lead back up to 20. They would withstand another Drew late run, holding on for a 14 point victory
