WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – Women's basketball falls to NESCAC foe Williams 71-58 Saturday afternoon. Wesleyan has now dropped their last three games, each by double digits. They hung in against a tough Williams squad into the 4
th quarter, cutting the lead to six with just eight minutes remaining before the Ephs pulled away. The Cardinals were led by
Marina Petruzzi '22 with 19 points and six rebounds. Wesleyan will be 4-6 going into winter break, while Williams wins their 5
th game of the year to get back to .500 at 5-5.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- A back-and-forth 1st quarter saw multiple lead changes. Petruzzi guided the Cardinals to a four-point lead after the first 10 minutes, contributing eight points in eight minutes (3-4 FG).
- Maggie Meehan opened the second quarter with a bucket for Williams, as they quickly managed to tie the game. Wesleyan responded with threes on two consecutive possessions, first from Petruzzi and then from Maggie Lee '23 to regain the lead at 24-20. Madi Gomez '24 added a three of her own and Wesleyan had their largest lead of the game at seven with 3:48 remaining in the half
- That Gomez bucket would be the last of the half for the Cardinals. A 12-0 run fueled by an inside attack by the Ephs gave them a five-point lead going into break
- Maggie Meehan and Williams put together an impressive third quarter that saw their lead grow to 11. Meehan contributed six points to lead the Ephs, who held the Cardinals to 28% shooting in the quarter
- Wesleyan showed fight in the final 10 minutes, as a Caleigh Ryan '22 layup had the deficit down to six with 7:30 remaining. The Cardinals would only make two more field goals in the time, as Williams opened up the lead to double digits, winning by 13
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Marina Petruzzi made a season-high four three pointers on way to 19 points
- Emma Kiernan '24 had her 5th game of the season with 12 rebounds
- Caleigh Ryan '22 put in a good defensive effort with three steals and two blocks
