Women’s Basketball Sets Single-Game Three Point Record in Win Over Framingham State, 74-67

Cardinals’ hit 17 triples to set new single-game program record

BABSON PARK, MA – Women's basketball takes down Framingham State 74-67 in their first game back from the holiday break. The Cardinals' showed little rust, coming out and knocking down 17 of their 34 shots from beyond the arc to set a new single-game record. They shattered the previous record of 14 that was set by the 2016/17 team against Fisher College. The win is much needed, as it breaks a three-game losing streak for the Cardinals. The team was paced by Caleigh Ryan '22 with 24 points and Maddie Clark '22 with 23 points off the bench. Wesleyan improves to 5-6, while Framingham State drops only their second game of the season (8-2).

In one of their most impressive offensive showings of the year, Wesleyan hit 17/34 shots from beyond the arc in a big win over the Rams. The Cardinals struggled to get anything going from inside the arc, but their three-point barrage was enough to hold off the Rams. They shot 22/62 (34%) overall, while Framingham State managed 23/71 (32%).

Coach Mullen decided to make a change to the starting lineup to try to spark some life in a Cardinals team that had dropped five of their last six. She decided to bring 2nd leading scorer Maddie Clark off the bench and it paid off, as the senior dropped a career high in both points (23) and rebounds (10) while also tying a career high with six three pointers. Caleigh Ryan was exceptional as well, tying a career-high with 24 points. She filled the stat sheet with eight rebounds, seven assists (season high), two blocks, and two steals.

Wesleyan jumped out to a 1st quarter double-digit lead thanks to Clark's three straight triples, 16-6. The Rams regrouped after a timeout and Flannery O'Conner went on an individual 5-0 run to cut the lead in half. The Rams would pound the ball inside with O'Connor all night, as she finished with 26 points and 13 rebounds.

The Cardinals took a five-point lead into the 2nd quarter due to some stellar shooting (6/11 3pt). Their hot shooting seemed to run out in the second quarter, as a 2/16 next 10 minutes had Wesleyan trailing by one going into halftime.

The hot shooting returned in the second half with the Cardinals making 5/10 three-point attempts in the 3rd quarter. A slick Clark baseline pass found the open shooter in Ryan who hit one of her three 3rd quarter three-pointers to give Wesleyan the lead back with 3:43 remaining in the quarter. They took a six-point lead into the final 10 minutes.

O'Connor asserted herself again in the 4th scoring 10 points and snagging four rebounds, but it wasn't enough. The Cardinals netted four more triples in the final frame and knocked down their free throws in the dying minutes of the contest to put the Rams away 74-67.

Wesleyan will finish off their 3rd in-season tournament against Endicott Friday at Noon. The Cardinals look to go back to .500 and continue their hot shooting heading into the New Year.
