MIDDLETOWN, CT- Women's basketball fell to No.8 Amherst Friday night, 78-61. After struggling to score in the first half, Wesleyan scored 44 in the second half to attempt to mount a comeback. The Cardinals were led in scoring by Caleigh Ryan '22 with 19, while the game's leading scorer was Amherst's Reeya Patel who put together a 27-point performance. Wesleyan will drop back down to .500 on the season at 4-4. Number 8 ranked Amherst will continue their undefeated start to the year, improving to 7-0.

HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Both teams had issues putting the ball in the net throughout the 1st quarter. A Caleigh Ryan three pointer mid-way through the 1st made the score 4-3 Mammoths. The Cardinals would not record another field goal in the first 10 minutes of play, shooting 1-18. Their defense kept them in it though, holding Amherst to only 13 points
  • An 11-2 run to open the 2nd quarter gave the Mammoths some breathing room, opening up their lead to 18. After another slow scoring start to the quarter for both teams, they exploded for 14 points in the final two minutes of the half. Amherst led 33-17
  • Patel got going for the 8th ranked Mammoths in the 3rd quarter, scoring eight straight to give them their largest lead of the game at 22. The Cardinals ended the quarter strong, cutting the lead to 11 capped off by a Lena Benway '25 jumper right before the buzzer
  • The offenses came alive for both sides in the final quarter, as they combined for 56 points on over 60% shooting. Maggie Lee '23 hit a three pointer to cut the deficit to six with eight minutes remaining, but that would be as close as Wesleyan got for the rest of the game.
