NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Wesleyan women's basketball team dropped a non-conference contest to New York University (NYU) by a 91-46 score on Sunday afternoon.
Emma Kiernan '24 scored the first bucket of the game and
Abby Gray '23 followed moments later with a jumper in the paint to make it 4-0 Wesleyan early but NYU outscored the Cardinals 21-5 for the remainder of the first quarter to take a 21-9 lead after the opening 10 minutes.
NYU extended their lead to 35-12 before
Madi Gomez '24 hit a triple, followed by a pair of
Caleigh Ryan '22 free throws and it was Gomez who hit again from long range to cut the deficit down to 18 points in the closing minutes. NYU answered back in the final minute and took a 45-22 lead into recess.
The Cardinals were outscored 28-11 in the third quarter before putting together their best frame of the game in the fourth as Gomez hit another three-pointer before
Lena Benway '25 came up with consecutive makes in the paint before the hosts closed out the victory.
Gomez came off the bench to lead the Cardinals in scoring with nine points (3-5 3FG). Ryan posted seven points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals in 35 minutes. Kiernan tallied eight points and five rebounds while
Marina Petruzzi '22 finished with seven points.
NYU was led by Brooklyn Shelton (12 points, six rebounds, three assists) and Erica Miller (12 points) who each tied for the game-high in points. Belle Pellecchia was fantastic all-around with 10 points, eight assists, six steals and five rebounds in just 18 minutes.
Wesleyan (4-5) heads to Williams on Saturday for a Little 3 showdown in what is the final game for both teams before winter break. Tip-off is set for 3:00 PM.
