No. 16 Wesleyan Uses 9-0 Run to Defeat Hamilton in Season-Opener, 13-7

Ronan Jacoby recorded six points on four goals and two assists.

CLINTON, N.Y. – The 16th-ranked Wesleyan men's lacrosse team used a 9-0 run to defeat Hamilton College on the road Saturday afternoon, 13-7. It marked the first game for the Cardinals since March 11, 2020.

Wesleyan (1-0, 1-0) was led by Ronan Jacoby and Matt Chase with four goals each. The Continentals (0-1, 0-1) were led by Ben Gardner's seven points on three goals and four assists.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Gardner scored the first two goals of the game within the first four minutes, and after Pat Grahling cut the deficit to one, Gardner tallied a third goal as the home team led 3-1 with 7:23 to play in the first quarter.
  • However, Wesleyan rallied with a 9-0 run with the first goal occurring at the 6:04 mark of the first quarter and the final goal coming at the 8:22 mark of the third. Jacoby scored four goals during the stretch.
  • Hamilton ended the run with 6:27 to play in the third following a goal from Britt Defeo. It was the team's first goal since 7:23 in the first quarter.
  • The Continentals scored three-straight to get within four, but Wesleyan closed out the game on a 2-1 run en route to the victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Jacoby finished with six points, adding two assists, and Jake Sexton totaled four points on two goals and two assists. Nick Daly caused four turnovers and pulled in five ground balls, and goalie Max Powers was incredible in net with 24 saves.
  • In addition to Gardner's three goals, four players scored one goal each for the Continentals. Defensively, Christian Byrne caused four turnovers and goalie Max Scheidle stopped 20 shots. Quin Crowley went 17-23 on faceoffs with 10 groundballs.
  • Hamilton held a 48-43 edge in shots but turned the ball over 20 times compared to 16 for the Cardinals.
