MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan men's tennis team didn't drop a set throughout play on Sunday afternoon as the Cardinals swept the visiting Camels, 9-0, from the John Wood Memorial Tennis Courts. Wesleyan picks up its first win of the season to move to 1-1 while Connecticut College remains winless at 0-3 in 2021.
NOTES
- Wesleyan set the tone early, taking all three doubles matches starting with a win at No. 3 with Zach Fleischman '21 and Harry Portnoy '24 combining for an 8-2 win in what was their first match as a doubles pairing on the season
- Wesleyan's No. 1 doubles tandem Noah Lilienthal '22 and Ben Mitchell '24 and No. 2 Marcus Sweeney '21 and Zach Lieb '22 both won their matches by identical 8-4 score lines
- Moving into singles play, Portnoy picked up his first collegiate singles win at No. 6 with a near clean sweep, defeating Walter Komishane 6-0, 6-1
- Lilienthal dominated his match at No. 1 as well, posting a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Julian Tien
- Next to finish was Lieb at No. 3 as he toppled David Poudrier 6-2, 6-0 followed by Fleischman at No. 2 (6-2, 6-1) and Mitchell at No. 4 (6-1, 6-3)
- The team all gathered around Sweeney to watch his match at No. 5 as the senior won a tight first set 7-5 before taking control late in a 6-2 second set win over Sean Jenkins to clinch the 9-0 victory for Wesleyan
- Wesleyan moves to 27-18 all-time against Conn. College and run their unbeaten streak in matches against the Camels to eight (five 9-0 sweeps in the win streak)

UP NEXT
Wesleyan hosts two matches next weekend, starting with a scrimmage against Amherst on Saturday starting at 10 AM. With the Mammoths only having four on their spring roster, the match will not count as a win-loss for either side. On Sunday, Wesleyan plays host to Hamilton at 1 PM for a NESCAC match. The Cardinals have dominated in the Continentals over time, holding a 16-1 all-time mark against Hamilton.
