No. 6 Men’s Tennis Celebrates Senior Day with 9-0 Victory over Hamilton

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – In what was the final home match for the No. 6 ranked Wesleyan men's tennis seniors Zach Fleischman '21 and Marcus Sweeney '21, the Cardinals certainly sent the duo off on a high note as Wesleyan dominated Hamilton with a 9-0 victory on Sunday afternoon from the John Wood Memorial Tennis Courts. Wesleyan (2-1, 1-1 NESCAC West) earns their second straight win while Hamilton (0-2, 0-2 NESCAC West) is still in search of their first win of 2021.

NOTES
  • Even though it was a 3-0 Wesleyan sweep of the doubles matches, all three contests were tight battles starting at No. 1 where Noah Lilienthal '22 and Ben Mitchell '24 took down Max Zimmerman and Danny Tsyvin 8-5
  • It was the same 8-5 score that finished the No. 2 doubles match as Sweeney and Zach Lieb '22 took down the Continentals' pairing of Rob Dotterer and Joe Reiner
  • The tightest match of the day was No. 3 doubles as Fleischman paired up with Harry Portnoy '24 for an 8-6 win over Gianni Esposito and Eric Stein that sealed the doubles sweep for Wesleyan
  • Singles play was all Wesleyan as all six matches were straight set Cardinal wins, with four of the six matches having the Hamilton player win three or fewer games
  • Lilienthal went to work at No. 1 with a 6-0, 6-2 trouncing of Zimmerman while Portnoy won his match at No. 6 over Esposito by an identical score line
  • Lieb was next to finish as the junior won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 over Stein and Mitchell was right behind at No. 5 with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Tim Derby
  • Fleischman battled to a 6-4 first set win at No. 2 before finishing with an  6-0 sweep in the second set to defeat Dotterer
  • The final singles match was Sweeney taking down Reiner 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 to finish off the dominating Cardinal victory

Wesleyan heads back on the road for a pivotal NESCAC West Division showdown against Williams with the match start time set for 2:00 PM in Williamstown. The Cardinals dropped the first meeting against the Ephs, 8-1, back on April 3 in Middletown.
