HARTFORD, Conn. – With 1:25 remaining,
Johanna Copeland scored her fifth goal of the game, off a free position attempt, to give Wesleyan women's lacrosse some insurance as the Cardinals edged Trinity in a NESCAC thriller on Sunday afternoon, 16-15.
Laura Baine added four goals and two assists for the 13th-ranked Cardinals (2-2, 2-1 NESCAC) while
Gil Horst added six points on three goals and three assists. Katrina Angelucci led the 15th-ranked Bantams (2-2, 0-2) with six goals and Christine Taylor added four.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
- The first half went back-and-forth often until back-to-back goals from Copeland gave the visitors an 8-6 lead with 11:41 on the clock. It was the first time in the game that either team led by more than one goal.
- The Cardinals led the rest of the half and took a 10-9 lead into the break.
- Trinity scored the first two goals of the second to regain an advantage but its lead didn't last long.
- Starting at the 22:34 mark, a player-up goal from Baine jumpstarted a 4-0 run by Wesleyan over a 10-minute span.
- The Cardinals led the rest of the way despite the Bantams getting within one on three occasions.
- After Copeland's insurance tally at the 1:25 mark, Lily Ives scored 16 seconds later to cut the deficit to one but Wesleyan held Trinity scoreless in the final minute.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The Bantams held a 29-24 shot advantage and won 16 of 30 draws.
- Indigo Pellegrini de Paur led the Cardinals with five ground balls and five caused turnovers, while also recording four draw controls. Rylee White led the team with eight draw controls, and Abby Wolk and Corin Grady each made four saves in 30 minutes between the post.
- Trinity's defense was led by Marcella Filbotte with four ground balls and two caused turnovers, and Emma Alpaugh had a team-high five draws.
