MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Despite a great effort against one of the top hitting teams in the NESCAC, the Wesleyan softball team dropped both games, 2-1 and 4-1, of a home doubleheader against Tufts on Saturday. Wesleyan falls to 1-9 on the season while the Jumbos move to 10-2.
Revi Brown '23 was the star on the day for Wesleyan as she allowed just one earned run and no walks in her 13.1 combined innings of work in the two games. Brown pitched a complete game in game one, taking the hard luck loss as she gave up just two runs (one earned) on six hits with no walks and two strikeouts. She then tossed 6.1 shutout innings in game two, giving up just two hits while striking out two.
Highlights Game 1 (L, 2-1):
- A pitchers duel throughout, Tufts didn't put a runner into scoring position until the fourth inning but Brown came up with a line out to end the inning and keep the game scoreless
- The home team struck first in the bottom of the fourth as the Cardinals loaded the bases with no one out, starting with a Hannah Docktor '24 single and walks to Sophia Sciarappa '22 and Alexis Campbell '22. Facing adversity for the first time, Jumbo starter Kristi van Meter did very well to escape with just one run allowed as Wesleyan plated Docktor on a wild pitch to make it 1-0
- Tufts capitalized on the momentum shift with two runs of their own in the inning as an errant throw on a Emma Della Volpe bunt allowed the game-tying run to score and a fielder's choice RBI groundout from Mia Steinberg put the Jumbos out in front
- Wesleyan put the first two batters on in the bottom of the fifth, Bella Tassone '24 reached on a wild pitch and Courtney Collins-Pisano '22 walked. Another wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position with no one out but reliever Kristina Haghdan induced a pair of groundouts as well as a strikeout to keep her team out front
- Ciara Castillo '23 induced a leadoff walk in the sixth and moved to third on a throwing error but once again, Tufts came up with the defensive plays once again as a fielder's choice play at the plate gunned Castillo out from third and an inning-ending strikeout ended the last Cardinal threat of the game
NOTES:
- Docktor's single in the fourth was the lone Wesleyan hit on the day but the Cardinal batters drew eight walks
- This was Brown's second career complete game while her two runs allowed tied a career-low and this marked the first time in her career in which she has gone thrown than four innings and didn't issue a walk
- Collins-Pisano and Campbell both walked twice, accounting for four of the Cardinals' eight walks in the game
- Steinberg and Rachel Moore each tallied two hits for Tufts
- Meter earned her first career victory, going 4.0 innings with six strikeouts and just one run and one hit allowed
- Haghdan picked up the save, pitching three shutout innings in relief with no hits allowed
Highlights Game 2 (L, 4-1):
- The nightcap was decided in the first inning as all four of Tufts' runs were scored in the opening frame. The Jumbos loaded the bases on their first three batters and plated runs on a wild pitch, error and hit by pitch with the lone run-scoring base hit being a Moore RBI single through the right side
- Wesleyan put up one run in the bottom of the first as Collins-Pisano drew a leadoff walk, stole second and came around to score on a RBI single from Sciarappa as the Cardinals trailed 4-1
- As Brown mowed through the Tufts lineup, Wesleyan had a chance to score in the third as Tassone knocked a leadoff single back up the middle and made it to third before being caught at home on a double steal attempt
- Wesleyan had another chance in the fifth as Tassone and Collins-Pisano both put up singles with two outs, bringing the tying run to the plate but the Jumbo starter Sophia DiCocco got Docktor out on a fielder's choice to short
NOTES:
- Wesleyan outhit Tufts in game two, 6-5
- Collins-Pisano went 1-for-2 with a run scored, walk and stolen base as she has now reached base safely in eight straight games
- Tassone recorded her first career multi-hit game as the first-year tallied two singles in the loss
- Brooklin Williams '23 took the loss as she went just 0.2 innings, allowing four runs but just one was earned
- Brown was stellar in relief, going 6.1 innings of shutout ball with just two hits and no walks allowed
