Johanna Copeland led the Cardinals with four goals.

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – For the first time since March 11, 2020, the sixth-ranked Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team returned to action Saturday afternoon as the Cardinals hosted 12th-ranked Colby College on Smith Field. The Mules claimed a 10-7 victory.

Colby was led by Gianna Bruno and Annie Eddy with three goals each in its season-opener. Wesleyan was led by Johanna Copeland who totaled four goals.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The Mules scored the first goal of the game just one minute and three seconds into play as Grace Toner found the back of the net.
  • Kat Cucullo tallied the Cardinals' first goal in over a year on a free position shot, which occurred just over a minute later to even the score, but back-to-back goals from the visitors gave the Mules a 3-1 lead with 24:45 on the clock.
  • Wesleyan answered with a run of its own. With 19:41 remaining in the first, Copeland sent one near the back left corner. Five minutes later, the senior caught a pass from Laura Baine and rifled one to the back of the net to even the score at 3-3.
  •  At the 11:35 mark, Bruno put Colby back on top and the Mules never looked back.
  • The Cardinals got within one with 2:51 left as Gil Horst caught a high pass in a crowd, and while keeping the stick high, she fired a low shot into the net.
  • Colby closed out the half on a 2-0 run to lead 7-4 at halftime.
  • Wesleyan outshot Colby in the second half, 10-7, but each team scored three goals in the final 30 minutes of play as the visitors held on to the three-goal lead.
  • The closest the Cardinals would get the rest of the way was two when Copeland scored on a free position shot at the 17:10 mark.
  • However, back-to-back goals from the visitors extended the lead to four and Wesleyan was unable to recover.
