MEDFORD, Mass. – The 11th-ranked Wesleyan women's lacrosse team lost to No. 3 Tufts in the 2021 NESCAC Championship Game Saturday afternoon, 14-3.
The Cardinals (3-3) played in their first conference title in program history after winning the NESCAC East Division with a 3-1 conference mark. On Saturday, they were led by
Laura Baine,
Gil Horst, and
Emma Wilson with one goal each. The Jumbos (6-0) won their first NESCAC Championship and were led by Catherine Lawliss who totaled five points on four goals and one assist.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
- Tufts jumped on the board first at the 25:39 mark with a free position goal from Kathryn Delaney but Horst responded for Wesleyan just 38 seconds later as she found the back of the net.
- The home team then pulled away with a 3-0 run over the next 10 minutes behind two scores from Lawliss.
- After Wilson cut the deficit to two at the 13-minute mark, the Jumbos closed out the half with another 3-0 run to claim a 7-2 lead at halftime.
- In the second half, it was all Tufts as the home team scored the first six goals to put the game out of reach.
- Wesleyan was held scoreless until the 2:33 mark when Blaine scored a free position goal on a woman-up opportunity.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Indigo Pellegrini de Paur led the Cardinals' defense with three caused turnovers while also recording four ground balls and four draw controls. Abby Wolk and Corin Grady each played 30 minutes in goal, and each recorded four saves.
- Eight different players scored for the Jumbos as Lawliss, Anna Clarke, and Ananda Kao each tallied multiple goals. Clarke, Emily Games, and Madison Lehan caused two turnovers a piece and Molly Laliberty saved 13 shots in net.
- Tufts held a 29-20 shot advantage and went 5-8 on free position shots while Wesleyan finished 1-2.
