Men’s Lacrosse Rallies to Defeat Trinity on the Road, 14-6

Ronan Jacoby recorded six points and finished ninth in program history in points.

HARTFORD, Conn. – Trailing 5-2 after the first quarter, the Wesleyan men's lacrosse team rallied by outscoring Trinity 12-1 the rest of the way en route to a 14-6 road win on Saturday afternoon.

Ronan Jacoby helped lead the come-from-behind victory with a game-high six points on five goals and one assist. The impressive victory marked the second over the Bantams (3-3) in consecutive weeks as the Cardinals conclude the abbreviated 2021 schedule on a two-game win streak to finish 3-2 overall.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Wesleyan scored the first goal of the game at the 13:32 mark from Jake Sexton, off an assist from Shayne Gallagher.
  • However, the home team responded with a 3-0 run over the next three minutes.
  • Kevin Moriarty snapped Trinity's scoring stretch with 9:06 on the clock, but Trinity scored two more goals while holding the Cardinals scoreless the rest of the quarter.
  • It was all Wesleyan the rest of the way though.
  • With 3:31 left in the half, Sexton found the back of the net once again to even the score at 5-5. Neither team would score the rest of the half.
  • The Cardinals picked up where they left off in the first half and scored three-straight goals in the third to take an 8-5 lead midway through the quarter.
  • Andrew Bailey snapped Trinity's scoreless stretch at the 4:33 mark, but Wesleyan's stifling defense wouldn't allow another goal.
  • The Cardinals led 9-6 entering the fourth quarter, and pulled away in the final 15 minutes, outscoring the home team 5-0 for the eight-goal win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Wesleyan overcame a 19-4 deficit on faceoffs to make the win even more impressive, while also being outshot 45-41. However, both teams placed 28 shots on goal and Max Powers was excellent in net for the Cardinals with 22 saves.
  • In addition to Jacoby's six points, Sexton finished with five on three goals and two assists. Gallagher, Spencer Robbins, and Alex Moynihan all scored once and dished out two assists, while Moriarty and Sean Penney finished with two points, and Matt Chase and Pat Grahling each totaled one. Jack Devlin led the defensive efforts with two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
  • Trinity was led by Connor Mcculloch and Jackson Wood with two goals each. Andrew Bailey and Jack Cahill both scored and Tucker Sheehan added an assist. Dan Crowley led all players with 11 ground balls and goalie Cooper Yaccino stopped 14 shots.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Despite playing in just nine games the past two seasons due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Ronan Jacoby still finished ninth in program history in points, with 178. His 150 goals are the third most by a Cardinal, and he played in just 48 career games which averages 3.125 per game.
