MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – In a game that saw two goals scored in the opening 1:23 of play, Middlebury scored the go-ahead goal late in the first half and held off a late charge from the Wesleyan men's soccer team in a 3-1 Panther victory. Wesleyan drops to 1-1 (0-1 NESCAC) on the season while Middlebury moves to 2-0 (1-0 NESCAC).
HIGHLIGHTS:
- The game got off to a fast and furious start with a pair of goals just 14 seconds part in the opening half. The Cardinals were first to get on the board as Dane Harmaty '24 sent a through ball to Christopher Textor '22. As the ball hit off two defenders, Textor fired a shot on-target that found the bottom right corner of the net from eight yards out.
- The hosts had an instant response as just 14 second later, Aiden Pape headed in a corner kick from Justin Saint-Louis to knot the score at 1-1.
- Just before the close of the half, Middlebury struck on another corner kick as Eujin Chae served a ball that Ben Powers headed to the opposite side, deflecting off the post and into the back of the net for the 2-1 edge.
- Not many chances materialized in the second half until at the very end when Harmaty blasted a shot outside the box that was tipped over the crossbar by Panther keeper Ryan Grady.
- The game was put away in the final seconds as Saint-Louis bed Brandon Reed at the 18 who fired in a shot to the far post that made it 3-1 just 24 seconds before the final whistle.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Wesleyan held the edge in shots (12-9) and corner kicks (6-4) in the contest.
- Textor's goal is the first of his career
