WORCESTER, Mass. – Playing it's second game in a span of 24 hours, the Wesleyan men's soccer team was no worse for the wear as the Cardinals dominated all facets of the game in a 3-0 road win over Clark University on Sunday afternoon. This signals a third straight win for Wesleyan (4-2-1) while the Cougars are now 5-4-1 on the season.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Even though the Cardinals were coming off a hard-fought 1-0 NESCAC home win over Bowdoin on Saturday, Wesleyan was clearly out on the front foot in this one, generating four shot attempts in the opening five minutes and six in the first 11+ minutes of this Sunday non-conference battle
- That early pressure paid dividends as Zach Wheeler '25 lofted a through ball to his runner Christopher Textor '22. Taking the pass in-stride, it was Textor in alone on the goalkeeper who was already way off his line. Textor had time to line up his shot and he made no mistake, shooting low and to the keeper's right as Wesleyan went up 1-0 in the 14th minute
- Wesleyan didn't sit back after the early goal as the offensive pressure continued and led to a second tally, this time it was Lucas Kimball '22 finding his classmate Nick Wallick '22 open on the left wing. Wallick, who came up from his usual center back spot for a rare chance to attack, converted as if he was an experienced striker. Taking the pass from Kimball, Wallick worked his way into the teeth of the Clark defense and on his right-foot, blasted a spot inside the near post for a 34th minute strike
- Heading into the halftime break with a 2-0 lead, Wesleyan put the game away in the 55th minute as Lucas Ruehlemann '25 sent a ball upfield to Noah Hartzfeld '24 who tracked the pass down and carried into the 18. Harzfeld carried in and with the goalkeeper holding his line, the ball was nudged past the goal line and suddenly it was a 3-0 game
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Wesleyan saw six different players register a goal or an assist in this one as balanced scoring continues to be a focal point in this Cardinal squad
- Wallick, who scored two goals in his 2019 sophomore season, tallied his first goal of 2021 in this one
- Textor tallied his second career goal and his first career game-winner
- For the first-year tandem of Wheeler and Ruehlemann, they each tallied their second assist of the team (tied for the team-lead)
- Liam Devanny '23 made four saves in his 84:15 of action before subbing out for Nicolas Galleno '25 who drew his first career action for the Cardinals
- Wesleyan hasn't allowed goal since a 68th minute tally at Williams on Sept. 18, recording three straight clean sheets for the first time since 2015
- This is the first road win of the campaign for Wesleyan as the Cardinals were previously 0-2-1 playing away from Jackson Field
