Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Blanks Keene State, 7-0, in 2021 Seaon Opener

Six different Cardinals scored in the first competitive game for Wesleyan in nearly 700 days

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – After almost 700 days between games, it's tough to argue that today's result could have been any more impressive as the Wesleyan women's soccer team earned a 7-0 win over Keene State on Wednesday afternoon at the newly-renovated Jackson Field. Wesleyan wins their season opener for the fifth time in the last six seasons while the seven-goal total is the second-highest single-game scoring total over the last decade for the Cardinals.

Six different players scored while 10 Cardinals recorded at least one point. Caroline Simpson '25, Lina Rodriguez '24 and Andrea Chiappetti '24 all netted their first career goals while Andi Wiley '22 dished out two assists for her first career multi-assist game.

HIGHLIGHTS:
  • It did not take long for Wesleyan to strike in this one as in the third minute of play, Remi Feuerman '22 sent a through ball up the right wing to Grace Devanny '23 who took one touch and fired a cross to the far post where Caroline Simpson '25 was waiting for the tap-in finish.
  • Simpson nearly added another just 32 seconds later as her shot from distance hit the woodwork and caromed away.
  • The second Wesleyan goal came in the 24th minute as Dani Milovanov '23 took a right-footed free kick from over 30 yards out that lofted high, up over the outstretched arms of the Keene State goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
  • In the 28th minute, Chiappetti scored her first goal as a Cardinal as Wiley won a ball in the box off an Owl defender and nudged a pass to Chiappetti who fired a shot low and to the right of the diving Keene State keeper to give Wesleyan a 3-0 advantage.
  • After an own goal from the Owls in the 38th minute made it 4-0 Wesleyan, Audrey Lavey '23 got involved as she was fouled in the box, giving the Cardinals a penalty kick. Lavey was the one to step to the circle and her attempt was hit with pace down the middle, past the diving Keene State keeper who dove right.
  • Just over a minute later, the sixth and final Wesleyan goal of the first half came off a perfectly weighted through ball from Wiley up to Gianna Argento '21, P'22 who took a touch and beat the keeper with a right-footed shot as she was in alone on net.
  • The third Cardinal goal in a span of just over four minutes of game action came in the 47th minute as Kaitlyn Hoglund '24 drove upfield from her right back position all the way into the attacking midfield end where she whipped in a curling pass to Rodriguez who beat both the defender and goalkeeper to the ball, touching it past both and giving her an open net to fire in the seventh Cardinal goal of the day.
