HARTFORD, CT – Women's basketball fell to Trinity Friday night in Hartford, 65-52. After falling behind by 10 at halftime, Wesleyan used a huge 3
rd quarter to get back into the game.
Marina Petruzzi '22 scored 12 of her 17 total points in that quarter to give the Cardinals a one-point lead going into the 4
th. The Bantams controlled the final period, outscoring Wesleyan 25-11 to come out with a 13-point victory. Wesleyan drops their third straight (6-9 , 0-3 NESCAC) while Trinity wins their 4
th straight to improve to 11-3 (3-0 NESCAC).
Petruzzi was joined by
Maddie Clark '22 (10 points) and
Brooke Guiffre '23 (15 points) in double figures. This was Clark's 6
th straight game in double figures, dating back to early December. Guiffre's 15 was a season and career high. She is back in the lineup for the second straight game after not appearing since opening night. Wesleyan was led on the boards by
Caleigh Ryan '22 with seven and
Abby Gray '24 with six.
Trinity was led by Reilly Campbell who put up 17 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Samantha Gallo joined her in double figures with 12 points while also helping on the boards, bringing down seven rebounds. As a team Trinity shot 45.1% from the field, while knocking down an impressive 15-16 (93.8%) free throws to seal the deal.
The Bantams used a 9-0 run halfway through the 1
st quarter to create some early separation, 16-6. Wesleyan was able to salvage two late buckets to end the quarter from Gray and Ryan to so into the first break only trailing by six.
The 2
nd quarter was had both team trading buckets throughout. Campbell finished the quarter strong with back-to-back layups to extend to Bantam lead back to double digits going into halftime, 30-20.
Wesleyan made their run coming out of the locker room. Petruzzi got going, hitting three straight shots including two three-pointers early in the quarter to trim the lead to seven. Minutes later she responded with two more layups to cut the deficit to three, making it the closest Wesleyan had been since early in the first half. A Guiffre triple gave the Cardinals a four-point lead nearing the end of the 3
rd, but the Bantams responded with three straight of their own to cut their deficit to one going into the 4
th.
Wesleyan went cold in the 4
th, going without a field goal for over five minutes as Trinity extended their lead to 10. A Petruzzi layup stopped the bleeding, but Trinity continued to coast to a 13 point victory.
NESCAC play continues this weekend for Wesleyan as the Cardinals will host Connecticut College on Sunday.
