SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – In what was their first dual match in nearly two years, the Wesleyan wrestling team dropped a 31-12 decision to Springfield on Saturday night.
In what was a historic event for both wrestling programs, Springfield played host to what is believed to be the first-ever wrestling match held in the historic Judd Gymnasia, which was built in 1894 and was where James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, taught class and coached the school's basketball team.
Wins for Wesleyan came at 157 from
Aaron Goldman '23 and at 184 from
Duncan Kreutter '22. Both matches came down to decisions as Goldman defeated Noah Beal Hernandez 5-2 to earn the Cardinals their first win of the day. Kreutter then came through at 184 with a 5-1 win by decision over John Summers.
Greg Fischer '23 won by forfeit at 125 to account for the remaining Wesleyan victory on the day.
Marcus Brown '25 dropped a tight 9-7 decision at 174 to Max Grzymala in his first career dual match while Kolton Gagnon lost by a close 5-2 margin at 285.
"Our lineup competed, but we are learning fast on key positions and costing out those tight matches," said Wesleyan head coach
Drew Black. "We are looking forward to a great week of preparing for our NEWA Conference wrestling team dual Championship on Sunday."
