NEW LONDON, CT- Men's basketball coasts past Connecticut College by twenty points for their 8
th straight victory. The 21
st nationally ranked Cardinals led the game from start to finish Saturday afternoon, taking down the Camels despite playing without leading scorer,
Sam Peek '22 (19 ppg), for the 3
rd straight game. Wesleyan improves to 15-1 (3-0 NESCAC), while Connecticut College falls to 6-5 (1-1 NESCAC).
With Peek out, it was a team effort that led to their 4
th straight 80+ point offensive performance. There were five scorers in double figures, led by
Shackylle Dezonie '23 with a career-high 17 points to go with four rebounds and three assists.
Jared Langs '25 has made the most of his newfound minutes over the past three games. After putting up 18 points and 11 rebounds against Bates, he followed it up with a team-leading 17 points and four rebounds.
Gabe Ravetz '23 got on track after a few rough shooting nights, hitting four three-pointers on his way to 14 points. He has now hit at least one three pointer in 15 of his 16 games he has appeared in this season. He also added a career-high 11 rebounds. The other two in double figures were
Jordan James '22 11 points on a perfect 5/5 shooting and
Preston Maccoux '23 with 10 points.
Nicky Johnson '25 also tied a career-high in assists with seven.
Jordan James got the Cardinals going early, with an opening possession dunk followed by a layup plus the foul to set Wesleyan up with an early 4-0 lead. Dezonie put through his first bucket of the game and the Cardinals enjoyed a 8-0 start.
An Andrew Hartel free throw for the Camels brought their deficit that had been as high as nine, back to four with 7:30 remaining in the half. From that point until halftime, it was a lot of Cardinals baskets. Wesleyan went on a 12-0 run over the next three minutes, capped off by a two
Teddy Lowen '22 free throws that gave them a comfortable 16-point lead. They would hang on to a 12 point advantage going into halftime.
The 2
nd half started the same as the 1
st, with a James layup to extend the Wesleyan lead to 14. The Camels would never get closer than they were at the break, as the Cardinals continued to extend their 2
nd half lead. It got as high as 26 halfway through the final 20 minutes after a Maccoux jumper, but the Cardinals settled for a 20 point victory on the road to continue their win streak.
Connecticut College was led by Andrew Hartel with 12 points. The Camels were outshot 39.7% to 52.3% from the field. Conn College actually made more three-pointers than the Cards (5 to 10), a feat that has only been done five times in 16 games.
Wesleyan will continue their historic season against Umass Dartmouth Saturday the 22
nd up in Massachusetts.
