No. 14 Volleyball Gets Back to Winning Ways, Dominating Stevens, 3-0

Cardinals shake off last Saturday's loss to Bowdoin with one of the team's best all-around showings of the season

HOBOKEN, N.J. – Coming off a loss for just the second time this season, the No. 14 ranked Wesleyan volleyball team put together one of its most well-rounded matches of the season, dominating at host Stevens Ducks in straight sets (25-16, 25-18, 25-16). Wesleyan is now 17-2 on the season while Stevens is 18-7.

Wesleyan totaled 38 kills and 10 blocks in this one, while hitting at a .365 clip which is good enough for their third-highest attack percentage in a single-match this season. The Cardinals committed just seven attack errors on the night, just one short of matching the team's season-low of six which came on Sept. 10 against Roger Williams.

Sophia Lindus '26 continues to thrive this season, as the first-year outside hitter totaled 16 kills on 33 attempts (.394 attack percentage) to go along with nine digs, two service aces and three blocks. Lindus now has at least 11 kills in six straight matches, leading the team in kills in all six of those contests.

Bella Ahearn '23 followed with an impressive .643 attack percentage, totaling nine kills on 14 attempts with no errors. This is Ahearn's second-highest attack percentage in a match over her career as well as a new season-high.

Michelle Jorba '25 added seven kills and three blocks while hitting .357. Bianca Gonya '25 and Kathryn Morton '24 totaled four blocks throughout the match to lead the defensive effort at the net. Jenna Otaola '22 tied with Lindus for the team-lead in digs with nine while Grace Bell '23 had seven for the match.

Running a clean offense tonight, Grace Dennis '23 reached the 1,000-career assist mark in tonight's win. She had an all-around outstanding performance with 30 assists, two blocks and six digs as the Cardinal setter.

Stevens finished the match with 35 kills, with Zelle Magio totaling 13 to lead the Ducks while Vivian Lisboa added 11. The 35-kill total was only three short of the Cardinals' 38 but the Ducks were doomed by 22 errors, bringing down their attack percentage to a .123 clip.

In the first set, Wesleyan held an early 12-7 lead until Stevens pushed back with a service run from Kathleen Reigner, bringing the score to a tight 12-11 margin. The Cardinals then pushed forward with a 7-2 run, as Morton smashed an ace and a kill from Ahearn finished off a dominating 25-16 first set win for Wesleyan.

Again in the second set, Wesleyan took an early lead at 12-6. Thanks to a service run from Otaola, the Cardinals extended their lead to 18-11 after more kills from Lindus and an ace. Although the Ducks had a 4-1 run towards the end of the set, it was not enough to overcome a massive Cardinal lead as Wesleyan took the second set, 25-18.

In the third set, the Ducks were able to hang with the Cardinals in the early staged, going point for point until the score was tied at 10 apiece. The Cardinals then pushed forward with six unanswered points thanks to Ortiz's aggressive serving. After a service ace from Zoe Swift '25, the Cardinals ran away with the third set and finished off a 25-16 victory to secure the match.

On Saturday, the Cardinals have a doubleheader, starting with a match against Kean at 10 AM before facing Stockton at 2 PM in a pair of neutral site matches at Stevens.
