Men’s Soccer Downed in the Final Minutes Against No. 14 Bowdoin, 2-1

BRUNSWICK, ME. – Wesleyan men's soccer was downed in the final minutes by No. 14 Bowdoin in Maine Saturday afternoon. A competitive game throughout, the Polar Bears netted a late goal in the 82nd minute which ended up being the decider. Bowdoin picks up a big NESCAC win to stay atop the conference rankings at 6-1-2 NESCAC (11-1-2 overall). Wesleyan drops to 3-3-3 in conference play (7-4-3 overall) placing them 4th in the NESCAC.

The two have had a back-and-forth battles over the past five contests, with Wesleyan holding a 2-2-1 record over those games. Wesleyan has taken the two at home, while Bowdoin has taken two of three on their home turf. Overall, the Cardinals hold a 36-25-5 record against their NESCAC foes.

The first half had chances from both sides, ultimately ending in a 1-1 tie. The Cardinals struck first with 15 minutes left in the half. Phillip Cubeddu '23 took a pass off of a corner and sent a lofting high cross towards the box. Will Geballe '26 came flying in and connected with his right foot to beat the Polar Bear's Michael Webber and give the Cardinals a first half lead.

The lead didn't last too long, with Bowdoin answering less than a minute later. The Polar Bears quickly created a corner, sending a loss cross to the other side of the field. It was eventually collected by Ronaldo Capral who send a bending shot from outside the box that beat Liam Devanny '23 to even the score heading into the break.

Both teams had their chances throughout the first 30 minutes of the second half, but it looked like it was going to end in a tie as it creeped past the 80th minute of play. Bowdoin gained possession at midfield in the 82nd minute, and immediately went on the attack. Julian Juantorena sent a long through ball past thre Wesleyan defense that was collected by Tyler Huck who beat Devanny for the deciding goal. The Polar Bears outshot the Cardinals 6-3 in the final 45 minutes.

Geballe scores the first goal of his Cardinals career in the loss. Cubeddu adds to his NESCAC-leading nine assists. Devanny makes four saves in his 90 minutes of action.

Wesleyan will finish their regular season on the road against Connecticut College. The game will have big time NESCAC tournament implications as the teams are 4th and 6th respectfully separated by only one point.
