NEW LONDON, Conn. – A penalty kick in the 86
th minute pulled Connecticut College back level with the Wesleyan women's soccer team, as the two sides played to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night in the regular season finale for both teams. Wesleyan finishes the regular season on a five-game unbeaten streak (3-0-2) while the Camels are winless in their last three.
Wesleyan (7-4-4, 4-3-3 NESCAC) has secured the #6 seed and will head back to #3 seed Bowdoin for a NESCAC Quarterfinal matchup, who the Cardinals just defeated 1-0 in Brunswick on Saturday. The Camels (7-5-3, 3-4-3 NESCAC) will head to the #2 seed Williams in their quarterfinal game.
After a scoreless first half, the fireworks came raining down in a thrilling final 30 minutes of play. In the 60
th minute,
Dani Milovanov '23 stepped into a right-footed, out-swinging corner kick on the near sideline. With the driving ball headed towards traffic,
Grace Devanny '23 managed to run onto a header. Making good contact, Devanny's header was on-target and had the Camel goalkeeper Sarah Hall throwing out her arms in desperation as the Cardinals went ahead 1-0.
The Cardinals nearly added another seven minutes later as
Maddy Reynolds '25 dribbled past a Camel defender on the near side and had room to dribble towards the box. With no one stepping out to challenge Reynolds, the sophomore right back stepped into a shot from distance that needed to be tipped over the frame by Hall as the shot was headed for the upper left corner of the goal.
On the opposite end, it was
Sarah Hammond's '22 turn for some magic as Lauren Anastos headed a shot on-goal from the opposite post as the cross came in from the far sideline. With Hammond tracking the cross, she was in a perfect position to send the Anastos shot up over the frame with a key save.
In the 84
th minute, Hammond made another denial on Anastos, this time the graduate goalkeeper needed to leave her feet to preserve the Cardinal lead. Another perfect cross came into the box for Anastos who headed the ball towards the left post. With Hammond moving across the entire frame, she dove to her right and managed to get a hand on the shot to push the ball out of play.
But just a few minutes later, all the Conn. College pressure paid off as Clare Mulvihill saw an initial attempt on-target saved by Hammond. The Mulvihill strike was hit with power so as the ball came off the crossbar and back into play, Hammond came off her line and made contact with a Camel player in front. With the referee stopping play and pointing at the spot, Mulvihill stepped up and fired in an equalizer with just 4:27 remaining.
Hammond shook off the foul in the box, saving two more attempts from Mulvihill in the contest, including one with two seconds remaining, to preserve the result and a tie for the Cardinals.
Devanny finishes the regular season with the team-lead in points (16) as she scored her sixth goal of the campaign. Milovanov dished out her third assist of the season to give her 15 points heading into the NESCAC Tournament.
This marks the second straight season Wesleyan is facing Bowdoin in the NESCAC Quarterfinals. Last season, Wesleyan came-from-behind to defeat the Polar Bears 2-1 in what was the first-ever NESCAC Tournament home game for the Cardinals. In the series history, Wesleyan heads into Saturday riding a five-game win streak against the Polar Bears, with the last four meetings all being decided by one goal.
