AMHERST, MA. – Women's soccer was defeated Saturday afternoon by the 22
nd ranked Amherst Mammoths 3-0. Wesleyan suffers their 4
th loss of the season, falling to 4-4-2 (2-3-1 NESCAC). Amherst continues their strong start to the season, improving to 7-2 (3-2).
Wesleyan was looking for revenge from a early season loss to the Mammoths in 2021 that ended their undefeated start to the year (6-0). The 2021 matchup was a defensive battle, with both teams being held scoreless through the first 45 minutes. The Mammoths managed a goal early in the second half of that one that ended up being the deciding goal of the contest. Wesleyan went on to only lose one more time in 2021, with that being in the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament to eventual runner-up TCNJ, 1-0.
In the 2022 version of this matchup it was Amherst again who came out victorious. The Cardinals started out the game with a quality scoring chance just eight minutes in.
Isabelle Martin '23 intercepted a pass from the Mammoths keeper, Mika Fisher, and delivered a shot from outside the box that hit the crossbar and went over the net. The next few minutes after that was all Mammoths. Amherst created two corner kicks and four shots over the next five minutes which ended in the first goal of the game. Isabel Stern carried the ball onto the Cardinals' side of the field, dishing off to Patience Kum who beat
Sarah Hammond '22 to her right, 1-0 Amherst.
Wesleyan had another good scoring chance to end the half, but
Dani Milovanov's '23 free kick was handled by Fisher and the Cardinals trailed 1-0 going into the break.
After a quiet first few minutes, it was the Mammoths scoring again in the 51
st minute. After the initial shot off the corner was saved, Alexa Juarez followed the miss and gave Amherst their 2
nd goal of the game. Amherst would add another insurance goal nine minutes later, Kum scored her second of the day. She intercepted a pass back to
Molly Brumbach '26, who entered the game to start the 2
nd half, and scored on the second effort to go up 3-0. Wesleyan was held to one shot on goal the rest of the way, as Amherst took home the 3-0 victory.
Hammond and Brumbach made a save apiece for the Cardinals, while Fisher contributed five saves for the Mammoths. Wesleyan actually outshot Amherst 15-14 (5-5 SOG) over the course of the game, with Amherst winning the penalty corner battle, 6-1.
Wesleyan will look to rebound in their match tomorrow, October 9
th, against NESCAC opponent Bates.
