MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan men's squash team opened their 2022-23 season with a pair of defeats against Navy (7-2) and No. 20 ranked Colby (8-1). The Cardinals fall to 0-2 on the season and are back in action against Bowdoin tomorrow at 10:00 AM.
Competing against the Midshipmen in the first match of the day, Wesleyan was first to finish as
Morgan Shatzman '25 came out swinging with a 11-0, 11-1, 11-0 win at #9 to get the Cardinals out in front early. After Navy found a win at #1, the Cardinals went back in front with a win at #8 as
Zach Idinopulos took down Benjamin Balser 11-3, 12-10, 11-8 to give Wesleyan a 2-1 advantage in the team scoring.
However, from that point forward, Navy won the remaining six matches, four of which required a fourth set.
John Sutherby '23 at #3,
Toby Goldston '24 at #5,
Ethan Yan '25 at #6 and
Jack Lungstrum '25 on #7 all forced fourth sets in their respective matches. Goldston won 35 total points in his match at #5 against Thomas Rankin before ultimately falling 11-9, 5-11, 9-11, 10-12.
The Cardinals came back later in the day to take on the Mules in what was a much closer match than the 8-1 score would indicate. Colby won a pair of matches that went the full five sets while Colby won another two that went four sets. In total, all four matches that were not decided in a sweep all went in Colby's favor to power the Mules to a victory.
Sutherby accounted for the lone Wesleyan win at #3 as he took down Adrian Castillo 11-5, 13-11, 11-8. Yan went the full five sets at #6 against Syed Haseeb Kashef in a very tight 9-11, 11-2, 11-9, 9-11, 10-12 decision that required extra points in the fifth set. Idinopulos also went five at #8 before falling to Rintaro Yamamoto 9-11, 7-11, 12-10, 11-9, 5-11.
