Women’s Hockey Earns First Win of 2022-23 Over Connecticut College, 1-0

Wesleyan took one of two against the Camels over the weekend

NEW LONDON, CT.- Wesleyan women's hockey earned their first win of the season Saturday afternoon, defeating Connecticut College 1-0 on the road. The Cardinals finish their weekend trip to New London with a split against the Camels. Chiara Christie '23 netted a goal just five minutes into the game for the Cardinals, and the defense did the rest. Wesleyan starts the 2022-23 campaign 1-1, while the Connecticut College Camels will also begin 1-1.

Wesleyan came out and immediately put a handful of shots on goal, however Camels goalkeeper Eun-Bee Huh was up for the task turning away all of them in the opening four and a half minutes. Wesleyan kept up the pressure, finally pushing through the first and only goal of the game just five minutes in. Wesleyan pushed into the Camels zone, with Brooke Keough '23 getting a back-handed shot off but Huh was there to make the save. The rebound ricocheted right in front of the goal where Christie was waiting, and her wrist shot beat Huh to her glove side. Connecticut College closed the period with a few shots on goal but Rei Halloran '23 was there to stop them.

The second period saw three combined penalties between the two NESCAC schools. With two of them happening at the same time, Wesleyan had the only powerplay of the period where they were unable to create a shot on goal. During four-on-four play there was only one shot each, both turned away by the two goalkeepers.

Wesleyan was able to hang on in the final period behind stellar play from their back line and a handful of saves from Halloran. They held the Camels to only five third period shots on goal, while producing a few scoring chances themselves.

Halloran finished the game with 19 saves in her 4th shutout of her career. Huh made 14 saves for the Camels. Christie scored Wesleyan's first goal of the season, and her 4th of her career. Keough contributed the assist, her 9th of her career.

Wesleyan will play in their home-opener on Tuesday November 21st in a non-conference battle against Salve Regina. The Cardinals have taken the last six meetings against the Seahawks.
