MIDDLETOWN, CT.- The Wesleyan women's hockey team extends their unbeaten streak to seven Saturday night with a 4-1 victory over the University of New England. The Cardinals seemed to control the game from the beginning, netting two first-period power play goals and never looked back on way to their 4
th straight win at Spurrier-Snyder Rink. Wesleyan has not yet lost at home, winning all four contests and extending their record to 6-1-1 on the season. The University of New England drops to 5-7-1 with the loss.
The Cardinals' defense was exceptional all day, but especially impressive in the first period, holding the Nor'Easters to only three shots on goal. On offense, the Cardinals benefitted from three UNE penalties in the period that resulted in both of their goals. Wesleyan managed their first goal of the game with just under seven minutes remaining in the period.
Jenna Stevens '24 worked the puck to
Shannon Burke '25 who one-timed a slap shot that beat the Nor'Easters' Delanie Corcoran. The Cardinals immediately got another power play opportunity less than a minute later, and capitalized again. It was Burke again, this time the sophomore carried the puck in from the blue line and ripped a shot from slightly closer in that found it's way into the back of the net for Wesleyan's 2
nd goal of the first period.
Despite spending a good portion of the period shorthanded, the Cardinals managed to outshoot UNE 11-5 in the second period. The Cardinals couldn't push past a third goal in the period, but were able to stifle two power play opportunities by the Nor'Easters.
Rei Halloran '23 was impressive again, making all five saves to hold UNE without a score through 40 minutes of play. Wesleyan ended the period with a power play chance themselves, however they were only able to produce one shot on goal that was turned away by Corcoran.
The University of New England was able to get on the board early in the 3
rd period on their 3
rd power play chance of the day. After a handful of shots in the opening minute of the power play, Meghan Hamilton ripped a rising slap shot from just inside the blue line that beat Halloran over her glove-side shoulder. Wesleyan was quick to extend their lead back to two goals with a response less than a minute later.
Isabelle Allieri '25 produced Wesleyan's first even strength goal of the game, picking up the loose puck in UNE's territory and sniping a wrister in the top right corner of the net for her first goal of the game. The Cardinals would keep up the pressure in the 3
rd period, managing to add one more insurance goal with less than three minutes remaining.
Caroline Kee '26 was the goal scorer, following a rebound in a hoard of bodies to score the Cardinals' fourth and final goal of the game.
Burke nets two goals, her first career two-goal game. She now had three goals in eight games to lead the Cardinals. Kee nets her first career goal as a Cardinal, while Allieri scores in her 2
nd straight game. Halloran made 14 saves, only allowing one goal. She has now allowed one or fewer goals in seven of eight contests and holds a save percentage of 96.5% that currently ranks 5
th in the country. Wesleyan outshot the Nor'Easters 36-15.
Wesleyan will return to the ice after break on January 2
nd in a game against Connecticut College. The two faced each other twice to open the season splitting the two games, with the Camels handing the Cardinals their only loss so far.
