MIDDLETOWN, CT.- The Wesleyan women's hockey team continued their hot start to the season, defeating Post University Tuesday evening. The Cardinals controlled the game early, eventually mounting a 3-0 lead in the opening minutes of the 3
rd period before the Eagles made a game of it scoring two in the third. Wesleyan would add an insurance goal in the final seconds of the contest to get to the final score of 4-2. Wesleyan improves to 5-1-1 in the early going, while Post drops to 2-16.
Th two schools began playing each other back in the 2017-18 season, matching up in every season since. Wesleyan has controlled the series throughout, taking all five matchups by at least two goals. In their matchup last year, the Cardinals managed a 4-0 win. With four more goals in this year's version of the series the Cardinals scored four more goals, now having scored four or more goals in each of the five meetings between these two teams.
After a handful of shots on goal from each team to open the game, Wesleyan managed to get on the board first midway through the period. The Cardinals found themselves on their first power play of the game. They worked the puck along the boards, with
Caroline Kee' 26 finding
Isabelle Allieri '25 who circled around the net before ripping a shot that snuck by Post's Grace Glasrud. Wesleyan had another power play chance in the final two minutes of the first period, but were held without a shot on goal by the Eagles' penalty kill.
The 2nd period was full of time in the penalty box, with five total penalties and multiple power play chances for both teams. Wesleyan opened the period with a power play chance, but they were only able to muster two shots on goal that were handled by Glasrud. They were immediately gifted another power play chance and this time they did not let it go to waste. The Cardinals worked the puck around, before
Chiara Christie '23 let a shot go that was redirected in front of the goal by Kee. The redirection sent the puck right to a waiting
Jenna Stevens '24 who finished it off to give the Cardinals a multi-goal advantage. Post could not take advantage of three Wesleyan penalties in the final minutes of the period, as the Wesleyan penalty kill stood tall behind a handful of saves from
Rei Halloran '23.
A minute into the final period the Cardinals added what seemed like was going to be the dagger. Off a faceoff in their own zone, the Cardinals broke out and extended their lead to three.
Effie Tournas '25 received a long outlet pass from
Bridget Cornell '23 leading to a two-on-one situation where Tournas looked off the defender before sniping one into the back of the net. The Eagles would not go out quietly, immediately answering with a goal of their own on a Tymarrie Grom backhanded shot from right in front of the net. Post added one more approaching the midway point of the 3
rd period and suddenly it was a game again. The Eagles earned another power play chance minutes later looking to find the equalizer, but the Wesleyan penalty kill made the stops needed to preserve the lead. The Cardinals would earn a late power play chance of their own, with Tournas scoring her 2
nd goal of the game in the final seconds to reach the final score of 4-2.
Tournas finished with two goals, her first two goals of the season and her 2
nd two-goal game of her career. Stevens and Allieri secure their first goals of the season. Kee earns her first two points of her Wesleyan career, notching a two-assist game. Six other Cardinals record an assist. Halloran made 23 saves while Glasrud made 26. Wesleyan outshot Post 30-25.
Wesleyan will return to the ice on December 10
th for another non-conference game, this time against the UNE Nor'Easters. Puck drop will be at 3 pm at Spurrier-Snyder Rink.
