MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan men's squash team topped in-state NESCAC foe Connecticut College, 7-2, on Wednesday night from the Rosenbaum Squash Center. The Cardinals are winners of two straight, improving to 2-5 on the season, while the Camels drop to 1-6.
Despite the five-point final margin, this final match of 2022 was a particularly tight contest with three matches going into a fifth set. However, in five of the other six matches, Wesleyan prevailed in 3-0 sweeps, giving the Cardinals more than enough needed to secure the win.
Ethan Yan '25 turned in the most-convincing victory of the night, dropping just eight total points in a 11-2, 11-3, 11-3 triumph over Alexander Lorenzo-Cruz at #6.
Morgan Shatzman '25 also dominated at #9 in a 11-2, 11-6, 11-7 win over Chris Meza.
Among the other 3-0 sweeps in favor of Wesleyan included
Abhinav Gupta '25 at #2 (11-5, 11-9, 11-7) over Tyler Maguire,
Jack Lungstrum '25 defeated Peter Russell at #7 (11-8, 11-6, 11-5), and
Zach Idinopulos toppled Juan Hurtado at #8 (11-5, 11-5, 11-8).
Nimai Kini '26 had to battle for a win at #1, as he took the opening two sets against Samuel Lovejoy 11-6, 11-4, before dropping the next two 11-9, 11-8. In the deciding fifth set, Kini and Lovejoy went to extra points before Kini secured the match-decider in a 13-11 victory.
Shanay Sanghavi '23 was the second Cardinal to win in five sets, as the senior captain rattled off wins in the fourth and fifth sets after going down 2-1 in set wins. Sanghavi's win over Noah Fish at #5 came via 9-11, 12-10, 8-11, 11-6, 11-4 set scores.
The Camels' two points in the match came from #3 and #4 with Henry Pelletier defeating
John Sutherby '23 (11-8, 10-12, 11-13, 11-9, 13-11) in a very tight contest while Ryan Mach toppled
Toby Goldston '24 in four sets (11-1, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9).
Wesleyan heads into winter break and will next play in a home round robin tournament on January 13-14 with matches coming against Haverford, Stanford, and Denison.
