Cardinals overcome a 14-3 deficit, winning six straight matches to take down the Golden Bears

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Trailing 14-3 after four bouts, the Wesleyan wrestling team dug in and rattled off six straight wins (two of which from pins) to defeat Western New England 28-14 on Saturday afternoon from Silloway Gymnasium. The Cardinals close out the season with a dual match record of 5-4, winning five of their last six matches, as Wesleyan heads into the championship portion of their schedule flying high. Kolton Gagnon '25 got the scoring started for Wesleyan with a tight 7-6 decision at 285 as he defeated Griffin Ostrom in a match that came down to the final seconds.

The Golden Bears scored 10 additional points over two matches, one of which being a pin from Cory Cope at 133, but Shailen Savur '25 did well to limit Western New England's Nick Arborio at 125 as Arborio came in with a 29-2 record and the No. 1 ranking in NEWA.

Trailing by 11, Wesleyan's rally started at 141 as CJ Shea '25 upset the eighth-ranked wrestler in NEWA in the weight class (Colby Riley) with a 4-2 decision. The match that swung the competition was the 165 bout as Jack Reusing '25 locked up with Sean Montiero as the two had near identical records on the season heading in. Just over a minute in, Reusing flipped Montiero onto his back and pinned the Golden Bear at 1:19 to earn Wesleyan a crucial six points in the team scores as Wesleyan suddenly led 18-14.

Marco Gaita '23, coming in with the No. 13 ranking nationally and 2nd in New England at 174, made easy work of his match as he defeated Christian Glaropoulos by major decision 11-1. Gaita's 18th victory of the season earned the Cardinals four more points in the team leaderboard, clinching the dual match victory.

Wrestling in his final home meet, Duncan Kreutter '22 had a moment to remember as he pinned Tyreece Cherival at 4:55, sending the Cardinal bench and crowd into a frenzy and sealing a 28-14 win for the Cardinals.

Wesleyan heads into the NEWA Futures Tournament held in Springfield, Massachusetts next weekend for a 11 AM start on Sunday, February 20.
