Women’s Hockey Splits with Williams, Losing 3-1

Wesleyan had just beaten Williams 3-2 the night before

MIDDLETOWN, CT- Women's hockey splits with Williams College this weekend, dropping today's game 3-1 after defeating the Ephs the night before 3-2. On breast cancer awareness day with Wesleyan in their pink uniforms, Williams got out to 2-0 lead with the 2nd period coming to an end before Wesleyan came through on a power play in the final two minutes of the period. Both teams would have numerous power play chances in the 3rd, however the defenses held strong. Wesleyan would pull their goalie with less than three minutes left, but Williams managed to keep them scoreless. The Ephs scored on an empty netter with 30 seconds remaining to seal the victory.
Wesleyan splits the series with Williams and drops to 7-10 (3-9 NESCAC). Williams improves to 11-7 (8-6 NESCAC), as they try to stay in the upper half of the conference standings.

HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Wesleyan dominated the shot total early in the period, before a Cardinals' penalty gave Williams a women-up advantage. The Ephs' Maddie Tix took a shot from short range which was turned away before a scrum ensued in front on the net ultimately finding Tix again who tapped it in to give Williams an early lead
  • After a relatively clean played first period, the 2nd and 3rd periods totaled a whopping 10 penalties between the two teams. Wesleyan tried to capitalize on one of those midway through the 2nd period. However, Williams' Maddie Zack stole a Wesleyan pass on her side of the ice and delivered a long outlet pass to Avery Dunn right at the Wesleyan blue line who beat Rei Halloran '23 for the shorthanded breakaway goal to go up 2-0
  • Wesleyan would get another power play chance later in the period, where they would ultimately come through with a goal. Audrey McMahon '22 took a pass from Mairead Kennedy '24 and took a shot from short range that was redirected by Effie Tournas '25 into the back of the net. Wesleyan now trailed only 2-1.
  • Early in the 3rd period Williams had a chance to add an insurance goal. After a Wesleyan turnover in their own end, CC Wallin had a one-on-one with Halloran who made a diving stop to keep the deficit at one
  • The Cardinals had a power play chance with eight minutes remaining, but could not capitalize. They then pulled their goalie in the final three minutes and applied immense pressure in the form of seven shots, but could not put one through
  • After the pressure of Wesleyan, Williams gained control of the puck in Wesleyan's zone for what appeared to be an open shot at an empty net. Robin Kitazono's shot was a few feet in front of the crease before Rachel Ziff '23 laid out to stop it. The rebound found its way to the Ephs who eventually put through the dagger on at 3-1 victory
