ORLANDO, Fla. – Facing a Top 20 opponent for the second time in three days, the No. 5 nationally-ranked Wesleyan women's tennis team only appears to be getting stronger as the week moves along as the Cardinals made quick work of the No. 18 ranked Kenyon in a 9-0 victory on Friday afternoon. Wesleyan (5-0) mowed through the Lords lineup, dropping just five total games in three doubles matches and only losing one set in singles play to roll to the win.
Wesleyan made it look easy in the doubles portion, earning 8-1 wins at both #2 and #3 while the #1 team of
Sasha Gaeth '23 and
Caitlyn Ferrante '23 defeated Daria Beshentseva and Eleni Dakos by an 8-3 score. At #2 for Wesleyan it was
Nika Vesely '25 and
Sophie Henderson '22 featuring in the 8-1 win over Natalie Connelly and Catriona Macintosh while
Katie Fleischman '23 and
Venia Yeung '22 defeated Erika Pontillo and Lalasa Nagireddy by the same 8-1 score at #3.
In singles play, the Cardinals faced a challenge at #1 but Ferrante proved too much in the end despite a hard fought match from Beshentseva. Ferrante won the opening set 6-1 before Beshentseva won the second set 7-5. In the third set tiebreak, however, Ferrante bounced right back with a 10-5 win to take the match.
In the remaining five singles matches, it was all Cardinals as #4, #5 and #6 were all flawless 6-0, 6-0 victories for Wesleyan.
Kriti Williams '24 defeated Macintosh at #4 while
Serim Jin '23 took down Pontillo at #5 and
Renna Mohsen-Breen '25 posted a clean sweep over Irina Beshentseva at #6.
Fleischman only dropped two games in the opening set before rattling off a 6-0 second set win to defeat Dakos 6-2, 6-0 at #2. Yeung then wrapped up the match with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Nagireddy at #3 to ensure a the 9-0 win for Wesleyan.
The Cardinals now shift their focus to a big match on Saturday when Wesleyan challenges NCAA Div. I foe Providence College in what will be the first all-time meeting between the two sides.
