Softball Falls to Wisconsin-La Crosse in the Season Opener, 7-0

LEESBURG, FL – Softball drops their season opener to Wisconsin-La Crosse, 7-0. Wesleyan is opening up their 2022 season playing 11 games in Florida, splitting between playing in Leesburg and Clermont until their return to Middletown, CT on the 26th. The Cardinals were only able to put together three hits against UWL pitching. On the other side, Wisconsin-La Crosse had their offense going. They scored seven runs on 12 hits, with only one extra-base hit. Wesleyan opens their spring break trip 0-1, while UWL improves to 3-2 on the young season.
 
HIGHLIGHTS (7-0 L)
  • UWL got going early in this one, scoring their first run just minutes into the game on a Kyra Lard single that drove home Jordyn McCormack to give them a 1-0 lead in the 1st
  • The Eagles had their biggest inning of the game in the 2nd, capitalizing on two Cardinals errors to score three runs. Their only hit of the inning came on a Kendra Leis single that drove home one of their three 2nd inning runs
  • Wisconsin-La Crosse added two more runs over the next two innings, in turn ending Isabella Secaira-Cotto '25 day in the circle. She finished giving up six runs (only one earned) on eight hits and three walks while striking out two
  • Wesleyan's best chance at putting a run across came in the bottom of the 4th. They ended up leaving two on base after Courtney Collins-Pisano '22 led off the inning with a single
  • Brooklin Williams '23 finished off the game in the circle for the Cardinals. She ended the game strong, giving up only one run on four hits over the final three innings
 
NOTES:
  • Isabella Secaira-Cotto started her first game in a Cardinals uniform giving up six runs (one earned), eight hits, and three walks while striking out two
  • Brooklin Williams came in in relief, only giving up one run on four hits in her three innings.
  • Darlene De La Cruz '25 made her debut going 1-for-2 with a walk
  • Ally Eden was impressive in the circle for UWL, pitching a nearly perfect five innings. She finished giving up only two hits and two walks, and was relieved by Remington Stark who closed the door with a scoreless final two innings striking out six batters

Wesleyan will continue their busy Florida trip with two more games Sunday against Western New England and Framingham State.
