TUCSON, AZ- Baseball couldn't complete the comeback against Edgewood Monday Afternoon, losing 7-6. After falling behind 7-4 going into the 7
th, Wesleyan put together a two-run top of the 8
th to make things interesting going into the final inning. The Cardinals ended up leaving two men on base after a promising start to the 9
th, and Edgewood would hang out for a hard-fought victory. With that loss Wesleyan is now 2-4 to start 2022, while Edgewood improves to 4-4.
HIGHLIGHTS (7-6 L)
- Matt Halas '24 continued his hot start to the year in the 1st inning of this one with an RBI triple. Halas drove in Ricky Finkel '23 who had singled earlier in the inning to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. Edgewood responded with a run of their own in the bottom half. Jacob Slonim singled to left field to drive in the tying run before a good relay cut down a runner trying to advance to third
- The Cardinals added one more run in the top of the 2nd off a Jack Nally '24 sacrifice fly. Nally drove in Dylan Judd '22 who had doubled to start the inning for Wesleyan. Edgewood retook the lead in the bottom of the 4th with a three-run inning that included two doubles
- Judd continued his stellar day with a leadoff homerun to begin the 6th that tied the game up once again at four. Edgewood had an answer in the bottom half of the inning, producing three runs on four hits to give them a late three-run lead
- The Cardinals wouldn't go away, scoring two more in the 8th to make it a one-run game going into the 9th. Wesleyan opened up the final inning taking advantage of two Edgewood errors to start the inning with two runners in scoring position and nobody out. After a walk to load the bases, Jack Scher '22 grounded out into a fielder's choice. The next batter was Tyler Cosgrove '25 who grounded into a double play ending the game
NOTES:
- Dylan Judd went 3-for-5 with a homerun, while also pitching a scoreless 2/3 innings
- Matt Halas (1-for-4) drove in two runs, and is now up to five total RBI
- Luke Lasaracina '25 was the other Cardinals player with multiple hits going 2-for-5
UP NEXT:
Wesleyan will play Augsburg tomorrow for the 2
nd time in four days. In their first meeting on the 12
th, the Cardinals won in dramatic fashion, defeating them on a walk-off in the 13
th inning.
