TUCSON, AZ- Jimmy Clifford '23 had a big game, leading Wesleyan to a decisive win over Augsburg Wednesday afternoon. Clifford went 4-for-5 with a homerun and four RBI in a dominating 15-5 victory for the Cardinals. Wesleyan and Augsburg faced off just four days ago in a 13-inning thriller that saw the Cardinals walk it off in dramatic fashion. This one only lasted nine innings, with the Cardinals putting together 15 runs on 18 hits. Wesleyan improves to 3-4 in the early season, while Augsburg falls to Wesleyan for the 2
nd time to drop to 5-5.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Augsburg was quick to get on the board, capitalizing on two Wesleyan errors to get two runs across in the top of the 1st. Wesleyan responded with a run of their own in the bottom half as Matt Halas '24 continues his hot play, driving in Evan Diaz '25 with a RBI single
- Both offenses stayed hot in the 2nd, starting with Augsburg who scored their 3rd run of the game on a Connor Stoik RBI double to give them a 3-1 lead. In the bottom half, the Cards responded with five runs on five hits with four different Cardinals driving home a run to give them a 6-3 lead
- Clifford doubled home a run in the bottom of the 3rd, later scoring on a designed first and third play where he scored at the expense of the runner on first getting picked off. Clifford continued his big day in the 4th, driving in three on a 3-run homerun to really open up the game at 12-3
- Wesleyan pitching would remain strong for the remainder of the game, holding Augsburg to just one run over the last five innings in a combined effort between David Tirrell '25 and Graham Gilchrist '23. The Cardinals but the finishing touches on the game with a Diaz RBI double to score their 15th run.

- David Tirrell picked up his first win (5 IP, 5 K's, 1 ER)
- Jimmy Clifford set career-highs in hits (4), RBI (4), runs (3), and hits his first homerun of his career
- Evan Diaz gets his first career hit, goes 3-for-5 on the day
