Baseball Takes One of Two Against Mitchell

NEW LONDON, CT- Baseball takes one of two against Mitchell College Sunday afternoon. Wesleyan won game #1, 2-1, on the back of a stellar pitching performance by Ian Appleby '24. Appleby pitched the entire seven innings, only allowing six hits and one run for his 3rd win of the season. In game #2, the Mitchell offense started to get going, pushing across eight runs to win easily, 8-1. Wesleyan splits, and now has a record of 7-6 while Mitchell moves to 14-6 in 2022.
 
HIGHLIGHTS (2-1 WIN)
  • Mitchell scored their only run of the game in the 1st inning. Hunter Yaworski hit a ground-rule double, which was followed up by a Lelo Martinez single to the left side that drove in the first run of the game
  • Appleby would shut down the Mitchell offense over the next four innings, allowing zero runs and only two hits to bring the game into the 6th inning
  • In the top of the 6th the Cardinals were finally able to get some runs across. Ryan Molinari '22 hit a single back up the middle that drove in Adam Geibel '22 (who singled) and Matt Halas '24 (reached on fielder's choice). Mitchell would threaten in the bottom half of the 6th and 7th, leaving runners on in both innings, but could not get a run across
NOTES:
  • Ian Appleby (7 innings, 1 ER, 6 hits, 4 K's) picked up his third win of the season (3-0)
  • Ryan Molinari (2-for-3, 2 RBI) drives in both of Wesleyan's runs
  • Mitchell outhit Wesleyan 6-5
 
HIGHLIGHTS (8-1 LOSS)
  • Mitchell scored a run in their first at-bats of the contest. They pushed one across without recording a hit, capitalizing on two hit-by-pitches and two walks to get out to an early lead against the Cardinals
  • After a quiet offensive next two innings, the Mitchell bats exploded for seven 4th inning runs to give them a comfortable 8-0 lead. They did their damage in a variety of ways, pushing across runs with three hits, four walks, two hit-by-pitches, and a wild pitch
  • Wesleyan scored their only runs of the game in the 9th inning. Evan Diaz '25 got driven in with the Cards down to their final out by Shaun Hillis '22, who doubled to left center to give them their only run of the game
NOTES:
  • Wesleyan outhit Mitchell 7-5
  • Shaun Hillis has gotten a hit in three of the four games he has gotten plate appearances in
  • Kyle Sylvester '22 (2-for-3) gets his 4th multi-hit game of the year

Wesleyan will return to their home diamond, Wednesday March 30th against Nichols.
