PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Wesleyan men's and women's squash team competed in both the singles and doubles National Championship Tournaments over the weekend in what was the final competition for the 2021-22 season for both teams.
In singles action, it was
Shanay Sanghavi '23 who represented the men as the No. 16 seed and was defeated by the ultimate runner-up and top-seed in the Molloy South flight, Callan Hall of Columbia, by a score of 11-2, 11-1, 11-0. In the consolation flight, Sanghavi challenged Udai Pal of Wililams in the opening round and Pal advanced with a 11-4, 11-6, 11-8 win over Sanghavi.
Portia Pliam '25 competed as the No. 15 seed in the Holleran East flight of singles tournament action, taking on second-seed Sarah Lopez-Dominguez from national power Trinity. Pliam made Lopez-Dominguez work but in the end, it was the higher seed advancing via a 11-4, 11-7, 11-7 victory. Lopez-Dominguez would go on to win the Holleran East bracket with a win over Princeton's Molly Chadwick in the final. Pliam's tournament continued in the consolation flight but she suffered a defeat to Mihiliya Kalahe-Arachchige of Mount Holyoke, 11-3, 11-2, 11-4.
Wesleyan also fielded teams in men's open doubles competition as well as mixed doubles. Sanghavi teamed up with
John Sutherby '23 and the duo fell to Brian Leonard and Tyler Carney of Yale 15-5, 15-13, 15-7 in the opening round. In mixed doubles, Wesleyan sent
Kevin Angulo '24 and
Marangela James '24 into the field and the Cardinal team lost to Esha Lakhotia and Samuel Lew of Brown 15-8, 15-7, 15-3 in the opening round.
Wesleyan men's squash concludes their season with a 7-8 overall record while the Cardinals won three straight matches in the CSA National Team Tournament to take 4
th place in the Conroy Cup D Division. Wesleyan women's squash posted a 9-8 season that included a signature win over No. 18 Stanford in the final dual match of the season to take 7
th place in the Walker Cup C Division at the CSA Team Championships.
