THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Another day and another Wesleyan men's lacrosse domination as the Cardinals were firing on all cylinders in a 25-5 victory over SUNY Maritime on Wednesday night. Coming off a program record for most goals scored in a NESCAC game (22), the Cardinals (2-0) put up their second-highest single-game scoring total in team history as Wesleyan benefitted from 14 different goal scorers to defeat the Privateers on a night where the playing surface was covered in snow.
Wesleyan's balanced offense featured five Cardinals who scored their first career goal including
Riley Larsen '22,
Matt Rettinger '25,
Jacob Braunstein '23,
DJ Dixon '24 and
Will Shull '25. Several others recorded their first career assist as in all, 19 different Cardinals posted at least one point in the 20-goal victory.
The 25 goals is tied for the second-highest single-game total for Wesleyan in team history, falling just one goal shy of the team record which came back on March 17, 2010 in a 26-4 win over Farmingdale State. The only other time the Cardinals have scored 25 goals in a game was in the second round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament where Wesleyan defeated New England College 25-6 at home on May 10. Combined with the 22-8 win over Bates last Saturday, this marks just the second time in program history that Wesleyan has scored 20+ goals in consecutive games as the only other time the Cardinals accomplished that feat came back in the 1993 season.
The Cardinals were a perfect 5-for-5 on the extra man opportunities in this one while Wesleyan cleaned up their penalty troubles from the season opener as tonight the Cardinals committed just one penalty compared to eight infractions in the season-opening win over Bates.
The combination of
Tyler Campbell '25 (13-for-17) and
Kevin Talbot '24 (7-for-10.) helped Wesleyan dominate at the X as the Cardinals finished 24-for-34 as a team thanks in large part to the combined efforts of the two underclassmen. Campbell is now 28-for-39 (71.8 percent) on faceoffs through two games this season.
Maritime had a tough time handling the defensive pressure applied by Wesleyan in midfield and helped translate to a 16-for-28 showing on clears for the Privateers for the game. Clearing at a rate just north of 50 percent allowed Wesleyan plenty of opportunities to capitalize on the turnovers which led to a single-game program record 73 attempted shots (43 on-target) for the game including 40 in just the first half alone.
Jake Sexton '22 led the way in scoring for the Cardinals with two goals and three assists for his fourth five-point game, all of which he has compiled over his last 10 career games played.
Justin Hazard '23 netted a hat trick with three goals to go along with one assist as he leads the team with seven goals through the first two games of 2022.
CK Giancola '24 added four points (one goal, three assists) while
Matt Gill '23 posted three points (two goals, one assist) and four ground balls while
Hayden Leachman '23 recorded his first career hat trick. Rettinger scored three goals, all in the fourth quarter, while
Pat Doherty '23,
Kyle Camphausen '22 and Larsen each scored twice.
Spearheading the defensive effort was
Nolan Collins '23 who tallied a career-high eight ground balls to go along with two caused turnovers. Camphausen added five ground balls and one caused turnover to go along with his first career multi-goal game.
Colin Hanley '22 drew the starting nod and made three saves in nearly 38 minutes of action to pick up his second win of the season.
Maritime was led by Patrick Schnell and Steven Pinto who scored two goals apiece to account for 80 percent of the team's scoring. Jack Daresta tallied 16 saves In almost 49 minutes in the cage.
Wesleyan returns home for a Saturday afternoon 1 PM start in what is the program's first all-time meeting against Stevens who comes in with a No. 20 national ranking.
