No. 5 Women’s Tennis Keeps Unbeaten Streak Alive with 9-0 Victory over Bates

Cardinals move to 12-0 on the season and 7-0 in NESCAC play

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Less than 24 hours removed from a thrilling and draining come-from-behind win over Tufts, the No. 5 nationally ranked Wesleyan women's tennis team showed no signs of slowing down in a 9-0 triumph over Bates on Sunday from the John Wood Memorial Tennis Courts. The Cardinals (12-0, 7-0 NESCAC) continue their domination of the league and region while Bates (4-6, 2-3 NESCAC) saw their two-match win streak come to an end.

Doubles play was a clean sweep as Caitlyn Ferrante '23 and Sasha Gaeth '23 toppled Anna Rozin and Ally Friedman 8-4 at #1. Sophie Henderson '22 combined with Nika Vesely '25 for an 8-2 win over Joanna Atwater and Salma Alsikafi at #2. Serim Jin '23, competing in a doubles match in dual season for the first time in her career, recorded an 8-1 win with Renna Mohsen-Breen '25 at #3 over Drew Williams and Olivia Gidlow.

Mohsen-Breen kick started singles play with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win over Alexandra D'Aquino at #4 while Kriti Williams '25 posted the same score line at #5 in a win over Laura Littlefield. Gaeth recorded her third win of the weekend and just her second singles win in the dual match season with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at #6 over Elizabeth Frekko.

Jin completed a multi-win day as she defeated Atwater 6-2, 6-1 at #2 while Kristina Yu '22 took down Friedman 6-0, 7-5 at #3. Ferrante saw Rozin give her a close match at #1 but it was the Cardinal who ultimately came out on top with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) victory to seal the 9-0 sweep.

Wesleyan will wrap up its six-match home stand next weekend with non-conference matches on Friday against Brandeis at 3:15 PM followed by a 2021 NCAA National Championship rematch as No. 4 Emory comes to Middletown for a 1 PM start on Saturday.
