Baseball Splits, Taking Game Two Against Hamilton

CLINTON, NY- Baseball splits in their doubleheader against Hamilton this weekend dropping game one 5-4 (7 in), before coming back and defeating the Continentals 6-3 in game two this Sunday. In the shortened first game of the doubleheader, Wesleyan jumped out to an early 4-0 1st inning lead. They would hold that lead into the bottom of the 5th, before the Hamilton offense produced all five of their runs to take the lead. The Continentals pitching would seal the deal in the final two innings. Game two was played on Sunday, where the Cardinals would jump out again to a 1st inning lead. This time they would hold the lead the rest of the way to pick up the victory 6-3. Wesleyan moves to 15-10 (6-3 NESCAC), while Hamilton moves to 13-12 (5-3 NESCAC).
 
HIGHLIGHTS (GAME 1, 5-4 LOSS)
  • Wesleyan scored all four of their runs in game one in the first inning. After two walks to open up the inning, Kyle Sylvester '22 recorded the first hit of the game to load the bases with nobody out. Adam Geibel '22 then came through with a single that cleared the bases and gave the Cardinals a 3-0 advantage. Ryan Molinari '22 delivered a sacrifice fly two batters later for Wesleyan's 4th and final run of the game
  • Alex Deutsch '25 was stellar through four innings of play, holding the Continentals to no runs on only three hits to hold on to the Cardinals 4-0 lead in tack
  • The Continentals offense finally got to him in the 5th, producing five runs on three hits to retake the lead at 5-4. Hamilton's pitching was impressive the rest of the way, keeping the Cardinals to zero runs on one hit over the final two innings of play
 
NOTES:
  • Adam Geibel (3-for-3, 2 RBI) has gone 7-for-9 in his last two games against the Continentals
  • Kyle Sylvester (2-for-4, 1 run) had his 7th multi-hit game of the season
  • Hamilton outhit Wesleyan 7-6
 
HIGHLIGHTS (GAME 2, 6-3 WIN)
  • Wesleyan got off to another good start in game two, scoring two runs on three hits. Matt Halas '24 led off the game with a double to left field. Luke LaSaracina '25 followed that up with a single to get runners on first and third to begin the game. Sylvester stayed hot, singling home Halas to get the Cards on the board
  • The two teams traded runs in the third and fourth. Evan Diaz '25 scored on a wild pitch in the third, and the Continentals had the answer in the bottom of the inning with two runs on two hits to cut the deficit to one. In the 4th, Wesleyan scored on an RBI single by Geibel. Hamilton responded again with a run of their own in the bottom half
  • Wesleyan added two insurance runs in the 7th to extend their lead to three. Wes Fritch '22 and Tyler Cosgrove '25 contributed back-to-back RBI singles to give the Cardinals a 6-3 lead which they would keep the rest of the way
 
NOTES:
  • Adam Geibel (1-for-4, 2 RBI) went for 7 total RBIs in the three games against Hamilton this weekend
  • Luke LaSaracina '25 (2-for-4, 1 run) was the only Cardinal with multiple hits
  • Scott Shield '22 was stellar in relief (6 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K's)

Wesleyan will compete in a non-conference game against Roger Williams Thursday afternoon at Dresser Diamond.
