Softball Sweeps Hamilton in NESCAC West Battle

MIDDLETOWN, CT – Wesleyan softball sweeps Hamilton in NESCAC West showdown Sunday afternoon at The Softball Field. Wesleyan had two big bounce back performances today after dropping three games in two days to Middlebury earlier this weekend. The Cardinals took game one on the back of a stellar pitching performance by Isabella Secaira-Cotto '25 who allowed just one run in seven innings on way to a 4-1 victory. In game two, Wesleyan found themselves down two runs in the first inning, but fought back to take the lead in the 5th inning. They would hold the lead the rest of the way, winning 4-2. Wesleyan takes both games to improve to 12-15 (4-5 NESCAC), while Hamilton drops to 14-11 (2-7 NESCAC).

HIGHLIGHTS (GAME 1, 4-1 WIN)
  • Wesleyan got on the board first in this one. Courtney Collins-Pisano '22 got the inning started for the Cardinals with a single to the left side. She would later come around on a first and third situation, scoring when Hamilton threw down to 2nd. The 2nd run of the inning came a few batters later when Sophia Sciarappa '22 hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Hannah Docktor '24 who had singled a few batters earlier
  • Hamilton fought back in the 3rd, scoring one run on one hit and a Wesleyan error to cut the deficit in half
  • Wesleyan added insurance runs in the 5th, scoring two runs on one hit and capitalizing on a Hamilton error to extend their lead to three. The Cardinals scored their runs in unconventional ways, loading the bases before getting hit by a pitch and recording a walk before Hamilton pitching was able to record the final out
  • Over the final two innings, Secaira-Cotto was spectacular. In the 6th, she put down the Continentals in order striking out two. In the 7th she allowed a leadoff triple, before retiring the next three batters to finish the game
 NOTES:
  • Isabella Secaira-Cotto (7 IP, 1 ER, 7 K's) was impressive in the circle, recording a career-high 7 strikeouts
  • Sophia Sciarappa (2-for-3, 1 RBI) currently has the 2nd highest batting average (.462) in the NESCAC
  • 7 Different Cardinals recorded at least one hit
  • Wesleyan outhit Hamilton 10-6

HIGHLIGHTS (GAME 2, 4-2 WIN)
  • In game two it was the Continentals who jumped out to an early first inning lead. Hamilton pushed two runs across in the first on two hits to gain the advantage
  • Wesleyan came back to tie it in the 3rd, scoring their two runs on four hits. Collins-Pisano and Docktor led the inning off with back-to-back singles bring Sciarappa to the plate. She delivered again, doubling off the right field fence to score both and even the game at two
  • The top of the Wesleyan batting order came through again in the 5th, taking their first lead of the contest scoring two runs on two hits. Collins-Pisano tripled to open up the 5th, followed by a Hannah Docktor hit by pitch (advanced to 2nd) to get a 2nd and 3rd situation with nobody out. This time it was Secaira-Cotto who delivered the big hit of the inning, singling up the middle to drive in two
  • Wesleyan's Revi Brown '23 shut down the Continentals over the final two innings to secure the 4-2 win. Brown only allowed one hit over the last two innings, and only five total
