WATERVILLE, Me. – The No. 5 nationally ranked Wesleyan women's tennis team closed out a productive weekend away, as the Cardinals defeated No. 26 ranked Colby 8-1 on Sunday morning. Wesleyan (16-0, 9-0 NESCAC) continues their unbeaten run to start the season, currently sitting as the lone remaining unbeaten team in the nation nearing the end of April. Colby (9-6, 4-4 NESCAC) suffers their third straight defeat.
In a match largely dominated by the Cardinals, the doubles portion was over quickly as Wesleyan dropped just three total games across the three matches.
Kristina Yu '22 and
Renna Mohsen-Breen '25 started with a clean 8-0 sweep of Katharine Dougherty and Emilia Callery at #3.
Caitlyn Ferrante '23 and
Sasha Gaeth '23 then finished off an 8-1 win at #1 over Sam Riordan and Sydney Landau. Finally,
Nika Vesely '25 and
Sophie Henderson '22 took down Lindsey Hernandez and Caroline Kittle 8-2 at #2 to hand Wesleyan the 3-0 lead heading into singles.
The clinching point came quickly as Yu wrapped up a 6-2, 6-1 win at #4 over Kittle before
Serim Jin '23 sealed the match with the clinching point at #3, defeating Hernandez 6-4, 6-1.
Katie Fleischman '23 was dominant at #2, scoring a 6-1, 6-1 win over Landau before
Kriti Williams '24 sealed a 6-2, 6-0 win at #6 over Caleigh McClain. Mohsen-Breen was next to finish at #5 as she eased past Dougherty 6-3, 6-0. Ferrante nearly made it a clean sweep of all nine matches as she won the first set at #1 over Riordan 7-6 (8-6) before losing the second set 6-1 and the super tiebreaker 11-9 as Colby salvaged one point to end the match.
Wesleyan heads into their final match of the regular season on Saturday as the Cardinals play host to Conn. College at 2 PM.
