Baseball Dominates in Final Non-Conference Game of the Season, Defeating WCSU 16-2

DANBURY, CT- Baseball dominates in their final non-conference game of the season, defeating Western Connecticut State University by a score of 16-2. Wesleyan opened the game with 10 unanswered runs, before WCSU finally got on the board in the bottom of the 5th. The Cardinals added six more in the final two innings to reach 16 total runs for the game, their 3rd highest mark of the season. They totaled 14 hits, with nine different players recording at least one. Wesleyan improves to 18-11, while Western Connecticut State University drops to 8-15.
 
HIGHLIGHTS:
  • After a relatively quiet first two innings that saw no runs come across for either team, the Wesleyan bats got going in a big way in the 3rd. The Cardinals scored six runs on three hits and two WCSU errors. Ryan Molinari '22, Jimmy Clifford '23 and Matt Halas '24 all contributed RBI singles
  • Clifford drove in another in the 4th to extend the lead to 7. In the 5th, the Cardinals added three more runs to give them a 10-0 advantage. They scored their three runs on two hits. The first coming by virtue of a Jack Scher '22 single up the middle and the second coming by virtue of a Cole Torino '24 double down the right field line
  • The teams traded runs in the 8th, before a 5-run 9th inning for the Cardinals to put the game away. The two big hits of the inning came by Torino on a RBI-double and Evan Diaz '25 on a 3-run home run to center field
 
NOTES:
  • Wesleyan used a pitcher an inning who combined for 2 ER and 10 strikeouts in their nine innings of work
  • Evan Diaz (2-for-2, 3 RBI) hit his 2nd home run of the season (T-2nd on team)
  • Cole Torino (2-for-5, 2 RBI) had career highs in runs (3) and doubles (2)
  • Kyle Sylvester '22 (2-for-2, 4 BB) ties a career-high with 4 runs
  • Wesleyan scored their 3rd most runs of the season and has their 5th highest hit total (14)
  • Wesleyan outhit WCSU 14-5
 
UP NEXT:
Wesleyan will return home for their final three games of the season, all against Middlebury. The first of which will be senior night on Friday April 29th at 4 PM.
