Baseball Falls to Middlebury on Senior Night, 19-6

MIDDLETOWN, CT – Wesleyan baseball falls to NESCAC West opponent Middlebury, 19-6 on their senior night Friday afternoon. Twelve seniors were recognized before first pitch, with many of them getting an opportunity to play in a big conference matchup against a top NESCAC team in Middlebury. A Wesleyan win would have gave the Cardinals a share of first place going into the weekend doubleheader against the Panthers. They now are hoping to take at least one of two games tomorrow to hold onto their 2nd place finish in the NESCAC West, securing a home NESCAC Tournament game. Wesleyan drops to 8-12 (6-4 NESCAC) while Middlebury continues its stellar play, improving to 21-8 (8-2 NESCAC).

HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Middlebury started their impressive day at the plate in the first inning, scoring three runs on three hits and capitalizing on one of Wesleyan's handful of errors in Friday afternoon's contest. The Panthers would take a 3-0 lead into the 2nd
  • Both teams' bats came alive in the 3rd and 4th innings, plating 12 total runs to reach a score of 11-4 in favor of the Panthers. Wesleyan scored on three hits and two errors, with the big hit coming from Dylan Judd '22 who singled up the middle driving home both Jimmy Clifford '23 and Matt Halas '24 who reached earlier in the inning
  • Wesleyan scored again in the 5th to get the score as close as six runs. Wes Fritch '22 closed the scoring gap on a RBI-single to center field. That would be as close as the Cardinals would get the rest of the way, with the Panthers quick to add five more runs on five hits in the next half inning to extend their lead to 11
  • Middlebury put the finishing touches on their decisive victory over the final four innings, adding a few more runs to reach their 3rd most runs of the season. Wesleyan added one more to get to the final score of 19-6
