Baseball Runs Past Johnson & Wales, 16-3

Cardinals mash 16 runs on 16 hits and played error-free baseball for the second straight game

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Wesleyan baseball team cruised to a 16-3 win over Johnson & Wales on the road on Tuesday afternoon. The Cardinals (10-8) have won three of their past four games while the Wildcats (4-17) have lost seven of their past nine.

HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Wesleyan jumped all over JWU, plating one run in each of the first four innings to build an 11-2 lead after four. The first three Cardinals all reached base in the top of the first, setting the stage for Evan Diaz '25 who saw his grounder to second base mishandled, allowing one run in. With the bases still loaded Shaun Hillis '22 drew an RBI walk as the Cardinals led 2-0 after one.
  • Patrick Murphy '25 got the start and his night began with a flurry, recording all three outs in the bottom of the first via swinging strikeouts.
  • Wes Fritch '22 tacked on another run in the second as Luke LaSaracina '25 doubled to right with one out and later came in on a Fritch RBI single to left.
  • After Murphy retired the side in-order in the second, Wesleyan struck for back-to-back four-run innings. Hillis scored on a balk, LaSaracina knocked in Jack Nally '24 with an RBI single, another run came in on an error and Kyle Sylvester '22 singled to left that scored Matt Halas '24 and made it 7-0.
  • JWU did manage a two-run home run in the bottom of the third to plate their first two runs of the game, making it 7-2, but the Cardinals answered right back with four runs in the top of the fourth. Jimmy Clifford '23 drove in Ryan Molinari '22 with an RBI single to center before Nally lifted a two-run shot up and over the fence. LaSaracina then recorded his third hit of the game and later came in on an Halas infield single.
  • As Murphy continued to dominate on the mound, Wesleyan's lead hit double digits in the sixth as Diaz singled home LaSaracina with two outs that made it 12-2 Cardinals.
  • Later on in the eighth, Diaz knocked in another run, this time an RBI double to center that scored Fritch from first. Later with two outs and two runners on, Clifford belted a three-run homer that made it 16-2 Wesleyan.
  • Dylan Judd '22 finished the game off with a scoreless ninth inning, striking out three JWU batters in the process.
