No. 3 Women’s Tennis Defeats Stevens, 5-0, Advancing to NCAA Third Round

Wesleyan (21-0) sets a new single-season win record, advance to NCAA Third Round for sixth straight season

LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 3 nationally ranked Wesleyan women's tennis team was decisive in a 5-0 NCAA Second Round victory over Stevens on Saturday morning from the campus of Washington & Lee. With the win, Wesleyan (21-0) sets a new program record for single-season wins while the Cardinals advance to the NCAA Third Round for the sixth consecutive season. Awaiting Wesleyan in the Third Round is No. 15 Mary Washington for a Sunday tilt at Noon. Following all the results from across the country, Wesleyan is now the lone remaining undefeated team in the nation. Several familiar faces are littered across the bracket as all five NESCAC teams (Wesleyan, Williams, Middlebury, Tufts and Amherst) are still alive heading into the conclusion of Third Round play tomorrow.

In what was the first all-time meeting between Wesleyan and Stevens, the Cardinals seized the early advantage, cruising to a 3-0 lead after doubles. Kristina Yu '22 and Renna Mohsen-Breen '25 were first to finish at #3, moving to 8-1 as a team after defeating Polina Odintseva and Juliette Marchisio 8-2. All-NESCAC First Team pairing Caitlyn Ferrante '23 and Sasha Gaeth '23 made quick work of Agatha Malinowski and Audrey Heaberlin with an 8-2 win at #1. Sophie Henderson '22 and Nika Vesely '25 secured a 3-0 lead with an 8-2 win at #2 over Isabella Dona and Alexis Fuda.

Needing just two singles wins to clinch the match, the Cardinals saw their #3 doubles team account for the two wins needed to lock up the postseason victory. Mohsen-Breen continues to shine in her rookie season, moving to 18-1 in singles play (12-0 in dual matches) in 2021-22 as she toppled Odintseva 6-1, 6-0. Yu then sealed the match as she defeated Fuda 6-1, 6-1 at #3, as the Cardinal senior is now 15-2 in singles dual matches this season.

Up next for Wesleyan is a matchup with No. 15 Mary Washington, a team that the Cardinals have faced just once before (5-0 Wesleyan win at Amherst in 2016 NCAA Tournament Second Round).
