Men’s Tennis Falls in NESCAC Quarterfinals to Williams

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The sixth-seed and No. 21 nationally ranked Wesleyan men's tennis team put up a great fight against third-seed and No. 6 ranked Williams, but in the end it was the Ephs landing a 5-1 win over the Cardinals in the NESCAC Quarterfinals on Friday morning from the John Wood Memorial Tennis Courts. Williams (13-2) continues on in postseason play while the Cardinals (7-9) await to hear their NCAA Tournament fate on Monday morning.

After losing all three doubles matches against the Ephs by a combined score of 24-6 in the regular season, Wesleyan hung in throughout and even scored a doubles victory in the second meeting of the season between these two storied rivals. Wesleyan's #1 pairing Peter Anker '22 and Ben Mitchell '24 dispatched Matt Kandel and Chase Cohen 8-4 after losing 8-0 to the same duo in the regular season. In the two remaining doubles matches, Williams won both by the same 8-6 score.

In singles play, Williams won the opening set in five of the six matches, seizing control after finishing doubles with a 2-1 lead. Michael Medvedev finished off a 6-1, 6-0 win at #5 before Jack Truwit won 6-1, 6-2 at #6 and Kandel secured the clinching point at #2 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Anker was the lone Cardinals to win a set, as he led 6-3, 4-3 at #1 over Cohen before play was halted as the Ephs secured the clinching point.
