Top-Seed Women’s Tennis Cruises Past Bates in NESCAC Quarterfinals

Cardinals (18-0) remain unbeaten, will face Amherst in semifinal action indoors at Rocky Hill on Saturday

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The top-seeded and No. 3 nationally ranked Wesleyan women's tennis team cruises past #8 seed Bates by a 5-0 score in NESCAC Quarterfinal action on Friday afternoon from the John Wood Memorial Tennis Courts. All matches contested during the postseason are played until one team secures a decisive fifth point. The Cardinals (18-0) continue on in postseason play with a Saturday afternoon semifinal showdown against Little Three rival Amherst at 1:00 PM. Due to rain in the forecast, all semifinal matches on Saturday will be played at the Tennis & Fitness Center of Rocky Hill.

Wesleyan cruised in doubles competition, with all three being decided in under 45 minutes. Kristina Yu '22 and Renna Mohsen-Breen '25 were first to finish in just 28 minutes at #3, defeating Olivia Gidlow and Drew Williams 8-1. Nika Vesley '25 and Sophie Henderson '22 dispatched Joanna Atwater and Sydney Byrnes at #2 in a clean 8-0 sweep. Finally, it was Caitlyn Ferrante '23 and Sasha Gaeth '23 defeating Anna Rozin and Ally Friedman at #1, 8-3, as the top Cardinal duo remains unbeaten, moving to 14-0 as a tandem.

Needing just two points to secure the match, the Cardinals found the clinching point early in singles play as Mohsen-Breen was first to finish with a 6-2, 6-0 win at #5 over Laura Littlefield. Then it was her doubles teammate, Yu, who scored the clinching point with a 6-2, 6-1 win at #4 over Alexandra D'Aquino. The Cardinals were up a set in all four remaining singles matches that go down as unfinished in the record books.

The two-time defending NESCAC Champion Cardinals must now prepare for a showdown with Amherst on Saturday as this will be the first time these two storied rivals have ever met in the postseason.
