Field Hockey Picks Up Decisive 6-0 Win Over Wheaton

Wesleyan has now won the last five meetings between these two schools

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan field hockey team dominated from the opening whistle Saturday afternoon. Diana Schwarz '23 put the Cardinals in front just two minutes into the contest and they never looked back. Wesleyan put home five more scores over the next 58 minutes to down Wheaton, 6-0. The Cardinals improve to 2-1 to start the season for the fifth consecutive season, while Wheaton drops to 1-6.

The scoring started early for the Cardinals, with Diana Schwarz beating the Wheaton goalie after carrying the ball from past half field. Wesleyan kept up their offensive attack throughout the first quarter, producing 14 shots and keeping the ball on the attacking side of the field for the first 15 minutes.

The Cardinals managed another goal in the first quarter, this time coming off the stick of Ava Galdenzi '24. After multiple shot attempts and a handful of corners over the prior few minutes the Cards finally put goal number two in the back of the cage. Helen Deretchin '25 put through a beautiful centering pass that found Galdenzi for the one-timer right in front of the cage to give Wesleyan a two-goal advantage.

Diana Schwarz delivered again early in the second quarter, with an incredible individual effort that gave her team a three-goal lead. Schwarz showcased her elite stick skills in a crowd of defenders, falling to her knees yet still controlling the ball. She then managed to get back to her feet and rip a shot that was turned away, however the senior followed her own shot and capitalized on the second effort for her second goal of the game.

Schwarz continued her impressive game with yet another goal in the second quarter. After Kenzie Kelly '25 controlled the ball into the arc, Diana took over, roofing a shot that completed her second career hat trick. The Wheaton defense held strong over the final few minutes of the half, turning away Wesleyan on their final two shots of the period.

Wesleyan was able to tack on two more goals in the fourth quarter to finish with a season-high six goals. Lois Schwarz '23 put the finishing touches on the victory with her first goal of the season to extend the Wesleyan lead to five. The sixth and final goal was scored by Galdenzi as she deflected in a power shot from Imani Ochieng '25 off a corner. Galdenzi got her stick on the Ochieng shot, deflecting the ball near post to cap the scoring at 6-0.

Wesleyan's defense was impressive throughout this one, headlined by Melanie Lim '24 who held down the back line while also producing four shots (2 SOG). Kylie Nelson-Marois '24 and Athena Vadnal '25 split time in the cage, with Nelson-Marois picking up the win and Vadnal making the lone save on the only Wheaton shot on-target in the contest.

Wesleyan returns to action Wednesday, Sept 21st against conference foe, Tufts. The Cardinals look to pick up their third straight win, going up against an undefeated Tufts squad that is ranked No. 4 nationally.
